Cold End to St. Patrick's Day Weekend

After a frigid start to our Sunday, sunshine prevails allowing temperatures to rebound into the 30s south and 20s north. Yes, that’s a warm-up from this morning’s lows in the single digits to teens. With breezy northwesterly winds over the course of the afternoon, be sure to bundle up in all your green wintry gear as you head out to any of the local St. Patrick’s Day parades taking place.

Tonight, temperatures slip back into the teens to 20s south, a few spots north will slip into the single digits, but it will not be nearly as cold as this morning. Similar to Sunday, the bright and brisk conditions will stick around for Monday and Tuesday. Late Tuesday is when we start to notice a transition to some unsettled weather.

The set-up midweek has New England sandwiched between a strong area of high pressure anchored over southern Canada and a coastal system sliding off the mid-Atlantic coast early Tuesday. By Tuesday night, the outer bands of this coastal system could bring some mix to snow for the Cape and the Islands. These showers could extend into early Wednesday.

Another round of wintry precipitation is likely late Wednesday into early Thursday as another coastal low swings in the similar path as Tuesday night’s system.

This time around, we could see some of those showers advancing slightly farther westward, so southeastern Massachusetts, Cape and Islands and the Downeast Maine coastline could get some accumulating snow, but not nearly as much as last week’s storm.

The bulk of the storm will remain south and east, but gusty winds and battering surf for the already vulnerable shoreline. The forecast of the midweek storms is not set in stone just yet. A wobble in any direction in the track of the midweek systems could make for more snow for southeastern New England or it could be a complete miss and remain far out at sea.

Looks like the next best chance at breaking the 40 degree mark for highs will be by next weekend, so unfortunately, there is no significant warm up in sight. The first day of spring is Tuesday and it looks rather chilly. Next weekend brings a chance for showers late Sunday, otherwise dry for the rest of the weekend.
