3-Alarm Fire Displaces 16 in Lawrence

Two firefighters were hurt and 16 people were displaced after a 3-alarm fire Wednesday afternoon in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

The fire broke out on the third floor of a triple-decker at 271 Prospect St., Lawrence Fire said. The call came in around 3:30 p.m. Police say a Homeland Security officer who was in the area called to report the fire.

One firefighter suffered an ankle injury and another suffered smoke inhalation. Both were taken to a hospital.

A resident of the third floor tells Telemundo Boston that a police officer woke her up and let her know about the fire. She and her son got out.

In total, officials say 16 people evacuated the building, which is a total loss. The American Red Cross of Massachusetts is assisting the displaced residents.

A parrot was rescued from the first floor. Firefighters couldn't get it out of the cage initially, but brought it outside in the cage.
