First Weekend of Fall Feels Like Summer

It’s officially the first weekend of autumn! Temperatures climbed into the 70s and it’s the warmest Boston has been since September 15th. We haven’t seen much sunshine over the last five days, but finally Jose has moved away! The average high temperature in Boston for September 23rd is 70°. The temperature reached 76° today.

There is still a MAJOR hurricane in the Atlantic: Maria. The hurricane is a category 3 storm with 115 mph winds. The forecast models show a more western track, which is concerning for the east coast, but not necessarily for New England. The Outer Banks of North Carolina could be brushed by Maria. In New England, we need to look upstream to the northern Plains. There is a cold front that will help steer Maria out into the open Atlantic by the end of the week. If we do see some impacts, I’d expect high surf.

Through the day on Wednesday, temperatures will remain above average. It will be rather humid as well, by late September standards. Wednesday night, the cold front that will ultimately stead Maria out to sea will usher in a much more seasonable air mass. Temperatures will drop back into the 60s for high temperatures.
