Lowell Police: Student Makes Snapchat Gun Threat

No one harmed, student in custody

A Massachusetts student is in police custody after allegedly making threats to students at Lowell High School on Snapchat.

Police say the threat was made early this morning after the student allegedly threatened to bring a firearm into the school.

After the post was seen by police early Friday morning, they contacted the staff at Lowell Public Schools.

Families of the students at the school were obviously surprised and nervous regarding the news.

"I get very nervous abour it because nowadays no place is safe," said Lowell High School grandparent Olga Diaz.

Others were concerned that some students don't think sometimes when they post on social media.

"I think most people just think it's a joke because I don't post things like that, obviously," said Lowell High School senior Jazlyn Gilkes. "But some things I post, I only expect my friends to see, like not to be taken seriously."

No students or faculty were harmed and the threat did not cause any delay in the school day. Police officers were sent to the school, however, to help with any students who needed support. Both parents and students praised officials with how the situation was handled.

"They've got a lot of practice doing it. I think it's a wonderful situation that the way they handled it was great," said parent Shawn Mulligan.

Lowell High School senior Alexis Diaz added, "I think they handled it very well because they did the right action by calling in police and stuff like that."

The student, whose name has not been released, is being held on a charge of making threats causing the disruption of a school.
