State Police Keeping a Close Eye on Head of the Charles Regatta

The first day of the 53rd annual Head of the Charles Regatta is in the books. Thousands will watch again Sunday, and that includes police who are keeping a close eye on the river and everyone around it.

The sound of fall on the Charles just wouldn't be complete without the Head of the Charles.

And it doesn't matter what angle you're watching from, when 11,000 rowers from around the world come to town, you show up on the river to root them on.

It's fun to watch but the three-mile course is no joke.

The paddling is a little easier this year with the picture perfect weather.

And as the temperature gets higher, the crowd gets bigger, and so do the concerns about security.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh says they are making sure people feel safe out there so everyone can have a great weekend in the city.

Roads around the river are closed, and state police are present.

It's a crowded race but a safe one, and spectators like the sound of that.

The first race kicked off bright and early Sunday morning, with the boats back in the water for the 7:45 a.m. start.
