19-Year-Old Dies in Maine House Fire

A young man is dead following a Saturday morning house fire in the Maine town of Hiram. Officials said four others escaped serious injuries.

The State Fire Marshals Office says a house with no smoke detectors caught on fire at about 5 a.m. Saturday.

According to officials, 19-year-old Alexander Mudgett died in the fire. Mudgett was living at the home with friends.

Officials believe Mudgett was trying to escape the fire because his body was found on the first floor at the foot of the stairs.

Two men and two women in their twenties were asleep in second-floor bedrooms. The four escaped by crawling out bedroom windows onto roofs and jumping to the ground.

The fire razed the building, leaving only one wall, according to a state Fire Marshal's news release.

"Fire investigators think the fire likely started on the first floor or underneath the home," according to the state Fire Marshal's Office. "The cause has not been determined."

Hiram is located in the central portion of Maine, close to the New Hampshire border.
