Mayor Marty Walsh Proposes Fiscal Year 2018 Operating Budget

The proposed budget would be $3.14 billion

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh proposed his budget for Fiscal Year 2018 during a meeting with the Boston City Council on Wednesday morning.

According to the Mayor's office, the budget proposal "balances sustainability and increased investments in key initiatives, and more fully supports Boston's neighborhoods."

Some of the goals of the new budget will be to continue to support the education of Boston's students and to keep the city safe.

The new budget also hopes to stabalize the city and achieve cost savings.

The proposed budget is $3.14 billion which is an increase of $147.7 million or 4.8% over the budget for Fiscal Year 2017.

Mayor Walsh released a statement ahead of the meeting explaining the need for a larger budget.

"I am proud to put forth a budget that makes strategic investments to support Boston’s neighborhoods, and builds on our strong record of fiscal management. This proposal represents a smart, responsible, and sustainable fiscal strategy that is forward-looking and will achieve maximum impact by investing in our people. Together, we will continue to put the City of Boston in the very best possible position to thrive this coming year, and in the years ahead.”

With the new budget, Walsh aims to focus on eight specific initiatives: strong fiscal management, education, housing, delivery of exceptional basic city services and safer streets, health and safety, prosperity and equity, open space, and expanding access for all.
