2 Dead, 1 Critically Injured in Overnight Crash on Cape Cod

An overnight two-car crash in Cotuit, Massachusetts has left two people dead and a third person facing life-threatening injuries.

"In the early morning hours of July 28, 2018, a tragic accident occurred in the Town of Barnstable resulting in the death of two individuals," Mashpee Police said. "We are in the early stages of what is going to be a comprehensive and thorough investigation into the Mashpee Police Department's involve facts and circumstances leading up to this terrible tragedy. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the victims and their families at this time."

Crews from Mashpee, Marstons Mills and Centerville responded to the scene around 12:15 a.m. on Saturday near 4728 Falmouth Road (Route 28) in Cotuit to find a collision between a large SUV and a smaller Toyota passenger car, which was split into two.

The occupant of the SUV was pinned in the vehicle and had to be extricated via the jaws of life. The occupant was then transported to South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, where they later died.

The two occupants of the Toyota were ejected from their vehicle, which was on fire.

One was pronounced dead on the scene while the other was transported to Cape Cod Hospital and later to a hospital in Boston, with life threatening injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. None of the names of the victims have been released.
