Safety Patrick Chung is signing a contract extension with the New England Patriots, according to the NFL Network.
NFL Inside Ian Rapoport tweeted Saturday that Chung is expected to sign the short-term contract extension, per sources, meaning his impressive second stint with the team will continue.
Chung tweeted Saturday that "sometimes things just happen out of nowhere," seemingly offering a reaction to the contract extension.
Chung was due $2 mllion in 2018, the last year of his current deal. The starting safety was re-signed by the Patriots on April 3, 2014, after one season with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Head Coach Bill Belichick had strong praise for Chung just a few days before this year's Super Bowl, saying at the time, "he's one of the best players in the league, one of the best players on our team."
The safety's contract extension comes after a busy week for the Patriots. First it was the mass exodus of players like Danny Amendola, Nate Solder, Dion Lewis, and Malcolm Butler. That was followed by a flurry of signings, including the reported signing of defensive end Adrian Clayborn from the Atlanta Falcons, running back Jeremy Hill from the Cincinnati Bengals and offensive tackle Matt Tobin from the Seattle Seahawks.
The team also acquired defensive tackle Danny Shelton and cornerback Jason McCourty in separate trades with the Cleveland Browns, and New England re-signed running back Rex Burkhead, as well.
