Slain 1998 Capitol Police Detective John Gibson Remembered By Massachusetts Family

The Massachusetts family of slain Capitol Police Detective John Gibson struggled Wednesday while watching the news about the shooting at the Congressional Republican baseball practice at their home in Waltham.

“Brings back all the memories, all the bad memories,” said John's father, Charles Gibson.

Det. Gibson was killed in the line of duty at the Capitol in 1998.

“John was killed at 3:40 in the afternoon on the 24th of July,” said the still grieving father. “Something that we remember all the time.. he’s never out of our minds, we always think about him.”

Twenty-two house members were at the Wednesday morning practice where witnesses say two Capitol Police officers, who were protecting House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, exchanged in gunfire with the shooter.

Back in 1998, Det. Gibson was fatally wounded while exchanging gunfire with a man who shot his way into the capitol building and killed another Capitol officer.

The sacrifice was remembered on the House floor later on Wednesday.

“He did his job, he did his job, just like these two police officers they did what they are trained to do, they did their job,” Charles Gibson said.
