The jury selection for the trial of a Massachusetts woman accused of encouraging her boyfriend to commit suicide through text messages is expected to start on Monday.
Michelle Carter of Plainville will be tried with involuntary manslaughter for her alleged role in the suicide of Conrad Roy.
Prosecutors say Carter, who was 17 at the time, encouraged Roy, 18, to kill himself through text messages.
Roy was found in his pickup truck dying of carbon monoxide poisoning on July 12, 2014.
The case has caught the attention of legal minds across the country. Many contend that issues regarding First Amendment speech are at stake.
NBC Boston legal analyst Randy Chapman said that in order to reach a guilty verdict, the jury would have to prove that Carter, "is somewhat complicit in the suicide because she aided him, encouraged him in some meaningful way that went beyond simply not taking positive action."
The state's Supreme Court has already ruled that there is sufficient evidence for a jury to hear.
