Residents have cast their first ballots here for the last 60 years.

According to NBC News, the result of the presidential race was a tie, with three people voting for Vice President Kamala Harris and three for former President Donald Trump.

Polls opened at midnight and closed at 12:07 a.m.

New Hampshire state law allows towns or communities like Dixville Notch to open their polls at midnight and close them shortly after, if they can prove that everyone who wanted to vote was able to. Dixville Notch is an unincorporated community in Dixville township in Coos County, located in the northern part of the state, about 20 miles south of the Canadian border.

In 2020, Joe Biden won all five votes in Dixville Notch.

Democratic former Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig faces Republican former U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte in Tuesday’s election to replace Republican Gov. Chris Sununu, who declined to seek a fifth two-year term. Either would become the third woman elected governor of New Hampshire, following Democrats Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan, both of whom are now in the Senate.

It was a narrow loss to Hassan in 2016 that ended Ayotte’s tenure in Washington after one term. Before that, Ayotte spent five years as the state’s attorney general, and she often highlighted her past as a prosecutor during her campaign.

Endorsed by Sununu ahead of September’s GOP primary, Ayotte promised to continue his anti-tax, pro-business economic policies. She used a “Don’t Mass it up” slogan to rail against more liberal Massachusetts to the south while accusing Craig of supporting tax hikes and blaming her for crime, homelessness and drug overdose deaths in the state’s most populous city.

“If you’re a retiree or you’re saving for retirement, she’s already said in this campaign she’s going to increase your taxes,” Ayotte said during a recent debate, referring to Craig’s support for reinstating a tax on interest and dividends. “If she’s willing in a contested campaign to talk about increasing your taxes, imagine what she’s going to do when she’s governor.”

Craig, who served on the Manchester school board and board of aldermen before being elected as the city’s first female mayor in 2017, emphasized her executive experience. She said it prepared her to tackle the state’s housing crisis, strengthen public schools and expand access to reproductive health care.

She was particularly critical of Ayotte on the latter issue, pointing to Ayotte’s Senate votes to defund Planned Parenthood and eliminate mandated insurance coverage for birth control. Though Ayotte has said she would veto any bill further restricting abortion, she supported a 20-week ban as a senator. Craig portrayed her as “the most extreme threat to reproductive freedoms our state has ever seen” and out of touch with state and local communities.

“Sen. Ayotte has spent her entire career attacking reproductive freedom,” Craig said during a debate last week. “Her actions speak louder than her words, and we cannot trust her.”

New Hampshire law prohibits abortion after 24 weeks of pregnancy except when the mother’s health or life is in danger or there is a fatal fetal anomaly.

While both candidates are running on their respective records, they’re also very aware of how the top of the ticket could impact this race.

Vice President Kamala Harris is leading in the polls in New Hampshire, so Craig’s campaign is looking to encourage voters to not split their ticket.

In contrast, the last time Ayotte was on the ballot with former President Donald Trump, she lost, and there’s a rocky history there; Ayotte rescinded her support for Trump in 2016 over his lewd comments about women but now backs him again, saying his record was better than the Biden administration’s. Republican surrogates are looking to tie her to continuing Sununu’s legacy.

“We’re really excited especially for Governor, we think we’re going to win that. Kelly’s been ahead in all the polls consistently outside of the margin of error,” New Hampshire GOP Chair Chris Ager said.

“People have got to decide right now, which side are you on. I’m with Joyce Craig,” Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey said. “Joyce Craig stands up for working families.”

The two candidates have been neck and neck for the majority of this race – and it’s definitely a race that’s being watched beyond the borders of the Granite State.

Ayotte has enjoyed stronger name recognition and fundraising, but Craig has benefited from a more unified party energized by Harris at the top of the ticket.

Ayotte voted in Nashua early Tuesday, while Craig voted in Manchester.

The Department of Justice announced Friday that they would be doing this at polling locations in 86 jurisdictions in 27 states for the Nov. 5 general election. Monitors will also be at three cities in Rhode Island, including Pawtucket, Providence, and Woonsocket.

“The Department’s longstanding Election Day Program is vital to combatting discrimination at the polls and furthering public confidence in the electoral process. Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination,” Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy said in a statement. “My office is proud to be a part of this important effort to protect the sacrosanct right to vote,”

Assistant United States Attorney Anuj Khetarpal has been appointed as Voting Rights Coordinator for the District of Massachusetts and will lead the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s Election Day monitoring efforts. Nationally, the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division will coordinate the effort which includes monitors from the Civil Rights Division, other Department divisions, U.S. Attorney’s Offices and federal observers from the Office of Personnel Management.

Massachusetts State Secretary Bill Galvin says this is not a new thing but it’s a continued effort to ensure that everyone gets to cast their ballot without any hiccups in a year that he believes will be one for the record books.

In 2020, about 3.7 million Bay State residents voted. This year, nearly 2 million ballots have already been cast through early voting.

Massachusetts polls are open from 7 a.m. through 8 p.m. Tuesday. State and local law enforcement say they will be at all the locations closely watching for any irregular activity.

The Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division’s Voting Section enforces the civil provisions of federal statutes that protect the right to vote, including the Voting Rights Act, National Voter Registration Act, Help America Vote Act, Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act and Civil Rights Acts.

The Voting Rights Act makes it illegal for states and local governments to use voting practices or election rules that deny or restrict voting rights because of a citizen’s race or color, or which result in citizens who belong to a particular language minority group having less of an opportunity than everyone else to vote for and elect their chosen public officials. It also protects voters’ rights to mark their own ballot or to be assisted by a person of their choice (where voters need assistance because of disability or inability to read or write in English).

The Division’s Disability Rights Section enforces the Americans with Disabilities Act to ensure that persons with disabilities have a full and equal opportunity to vote. The Division’s Criminal Section enforces federal criminal statutes that prohibit voter intimidation and voter suppression based on race, color, national origin or religion.

According to the DOJ, the public can direct concerns or complaints about voting rights to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston at 833-634-8669. Complaints about possible violations of the federal voting rights laws can also be made directly to the Civil Rights Division in Washington, DC by complaint form at https://civilrights.justice.gov/ or by phone at 800-253-3931.

Individuals with questions or complaints related to the ADA may call the department’s toll-free ADA information hotline at 800-514-0301 or 833-610-1264 (TTY) or submit a complaint through a link on the department’s ADA website at www.ada.gov.

Complaints related to any disruptions at a polling place should always be reported to local election officials, the DOJ said. Complaints related to violence, threats of violence or intimidation at a polling place should be reported immediately to local police authorities by calling 911.

After any morning clouds (or sprinkles) scatter, we’ll head for 70 in the afternoon — Yes, even though we only have a little over 10 hours of daylight.

This airmass is very warm for our chilly November standards. It was between 15 and 20 degrees above normal throughout the Upper Midwest Monday, and all that warmth is heading in for a two-day stand.

Records are out of reach Tuesday, but with a super-mild start Wednesday in the 60s (!), we should be able to crack the records set WAY back in 2022 of 76 in Boston and 72 in Worcester – even with a solid deck of afternoon clouds.

Winds are increasing Tuesday; some gusts may top 30 mph across southeast Mass.

Fire danger continues to run high, and this is the last thing we need as fires continue to burn on the North Shore.

The passing front Wednesday afternoon will help us drop back to the upper 60s (hardly a cooldown) on Thursday and “only” near 60 on Friday — (still a whole 5 degrees above normal). It’s not until the weekend that we drop near normal.

We’re also keeping an eye on the tropics this week. Tropical Storm Rafael is moving towards Cuba and the Gulf of Mexico by the weekend. We’re cautiously optimistic about remnants getting pulled into a weather system early next week.

This would infuse a large amount of water vapor into the system and translate to beneficial rain for New England. We’ll see how things evolve in the coming days, but there’s a solid chance we could pull this off.

Deaton, an attorney who moved to the state from Rhode Island earlier this year, tried to portray the former Harvard Law School professor as out of touch with ordinary Bay State residents.

Warren cast herself as a champion for an embattled middle class and a critic of regulations benefitting the wealthy. Warren has remained popular in the state despite coming in third in Massachusetts in her 2020 bid for president.

Warren first burst onto the national scene during the 2008 financial crisis with calls for tougher consumer safeguards, resulting in the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. She has gone on to become one of her party’s most prominent liberal voices.

“I first ran for the Senate because I saw how the system is rigged for the rich and the powerful and against everyone else and I won because Massachusetts voters know it too,” Warren said in a recent campaign ad.

In 2012, Warren defeated Republican Scott Brown, who was elected after the death of longtime Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy to serve out the last two years of his term. Six years later, she easily defeated Republican challenger Geoff Diehl.

During the campaign, Deaton likened himself to former popular moderate Republican Massachusetts governors including Bill Weld and Charlie Baker, and said he did not support former President Donald Trump’s bid for a second term.

Although the candidates have taken similar stands on some issues, they tried to sharply distinguish themselves from each other.

Both expressed sympathy for migrants entering the country but faulted the other for not doing enough to confront the country’s border crisis during a debate on WBZ-TV.

Warren said the country needs comprehensive immigration reform and said Republicans, led by Trump, have blocked progress.

“The Republican playbook is one that Donald Trump has perfected,” she said.

Deaton said Warren should have confronted the issue more directly while in office, noting that she voted against a bipartisan border bill that failed.

“It would have brought relief, it wasn’t perfect, ” Deaton said.

Warren has said the bill was already doomed and she voted against it to show she wanted changes.

Both also said they support abortion rights. Deaton criticized Warren and other Democrats for not immediately pushing to write Roe v. Wade into law after the Supreme Court overturned the earlier ruling guaranteeing abortion rights.

“They didn’t want to settle the abortion issue. They wanted it divisive. They wanted it as an election issue,” Deaton said.

Warren said it was a matter of trust. She said Deaton had said he would have voted for Neil Gorsuch, one of the justices who overturned Roe.

Warren’s popularity failed to translate when she ran for the White House in 2020. After a relatively strong start, Warren’s presidential hopes faded in part under withering criticism from Trump who taunted her over her claims of Native American heritage.

She ultimately finished third in Massachusetts, behind Joe Biden and Vermont independent U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Medford police said Tuesday that the teen is facing several charges in juvenile court, including assault with a dangerous weapon, carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a firearm with ammunition, possession of ammunition, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building and attempted assault by discharge of a firearm.

Surveillance video captured the terrifying incident playing out around 1 a.m. Friday outside Pizza Days, just down the street from Tufts University. The footage showed a large group of people in the parking lot, with one person seen drawing a gun from his waistband and firing it. The crowd quickly fled.

Two police cruisers were parked in the lot at the time. An officer could be seen pulling out a gun, but the gunman got away.

Medford police said their investigation determined that two people fired multiple shots at a victim during an altercation outside the pizza shop. No injuries were reported.

Officers found a gun, along with several shell casings, at the scene. They reported hearing about eight gunshots in all.

A second suspect, identified by police as 18-year-old Sinai Stephens, of Cambridge, is still at large. Anyone with information about their whereabouts, or any other information about the incident, is asked to contact Medford police at 781-391-6767.

Boston man arrested for brandishing a gun during Uber ride in Medford

The Suffolk District Attorney’s Office confirmed Tuesday that Mario Evans has passed away. He had been hospitalized in critical condition after being rescued from the early-morning blaze on Oct. 29.

The fire was reported around 4 a.m. on Hyde Park Avenue. When firefighters arrived, smoke was already showing, and firefighters went in and removed the teen from the second floor.

No firefighters were injured.

Video from the scene showed multiple engines and other emergency vehicles at the scene, and some of the home’s windows had been broken.

The home on Gledhill Avenue is about a block from Everett High School, but posts from the city and first responders on social media said there was no threat to the school. They didn’t share more details on the drug-making chemicals that were reported being disposed.

“A State hazardous materials (HazMat) team in protective gear is on site … in Everett to search and secure the premises in response to reports of an individual disposing of chemicals related to the manufacturing of illicit narcotics at multiple locations around the city,” said a Facebook post from the city Monday afternoon. “Everett police and fire currently have the area cordoned off and the public is urged to stay clear of the area until it is rendered safe by first responders. There is no immediate threat to the public and the Everett Public Schools have been notified. There is no further information available at this time.”

Everett police said that chemicals discovered in a home on Gledhill Avenue were the focus of the investigation.

“The streets around the area have been blocked off and the scene is secure, there is no danger to surrounding neighbors and homes,” they said in a post.

The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services said state hazmat crews were assisting local responders.

“Their mission is to identify and, if necessary, mitigate and hazardous materials,” a spokesperson told NBC10 Boston in a statement.

It wasn’t immediately clear if anyone had been arrested or if any chemicals involved in making drugs had been dumped around the city.

Everett firefighters said that, if the area is still blocked off when school is dismissed, students will be told to exit from the front of the building or to head toward Elm Street if they leave from the back of the building, which is on Gledhill Avenue.

NBC10 Boston saw streets cordoned off in the area, as well as a large number of firefighters, police and EMS at the intersection of Gledhill Avenue and Sycamore Street.

Boston police say the incident happened just after 4:15 p.m. on Washington Street in the area of Forest Hills.

The woman suffered life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Authorities did not say whether any arrests have been made.

The stabbing is under investigation.

Rafael had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph as it moved to the north about 120 miles south of Kingston, Jamaica, according to the latest update from the National Hurricane Center.

A tropical storm watch was issued for the Lower and Middle Florida Keys from Key West to west of the Channel 5 Bridge, and for the Dry Tortugas for Rafael.

The storm is expected to bring heavy rain to Jamaica and the Cayman Islands before strengthening to a hurricane and likely hitting Cuba, forecasters said.

A hurricane warning was in effect for the Cuban provinces of Pinar del Rio, Artemisa, La Habana, Mayabeque, Matanzas, and the Isle of Youth, as well as the Cayman Islands, while a tropical storm warning was in effect for Jamaica and the Cuban provinces of Villa Clara, Cienfuegos, Sancti Spiritus, and Ciego de Avila, the NHC said.

According to the NHC, the system was expected to be near Jamaica later Monday and by late Monday and the Cayman Islands on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The NHC’s potential track showed the system moving into the Gulf of Mexico.

Heavy rainfall will affect the western Caribbean with totals of 3 to 6 inches and up to 9 inches expected locally in Jamaica and southern Cuba. Flooding and mudslides are possible in those areas.

Heavy rains will reach Florida and adjacent areas of the southeast U.S. by mid- to late week, the center said.

Tropical storm conditions are possible in the Lower and Middle Florida Keys beginning late Wednesday or Wednesday night, the NHC said.

Rafael is the 17th named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

In Newmarket, there was a long line of over 100 people pouring outside into the hallway at Newmarket High School, and a second line for people to drop their ballots into the ballot machine after they voted.

State Rep. Bill Boyd said on X that there was a long line in Merrimack that wrapped around the block.

In New Hampshire, there is no early in-person voting, so a good number of voters had to show up on Tuesday to make their choice.

Large crowds are expected again when polls close Tuesday evening as well. New Hampshire polls close at 7 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., depending on the community.

NBC affiliate WJAR reported the crash happened outside a restaurant on Metacom Avenue.

Police told the station that the victim, a 59-year-old man, was pinned under the vehicle.

The man was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey was in Manchester making the case for Joyce Craig as her counterpart in New Hampshire, painting her opponent, Kelly Ayotte, as a Trump Republican against abortion.

Healey also emphasized that the Harris-Walz campaign will protect reproductive rights.

“Kelly Ayotte — just like Donald Trump — they’re not about freedom. It’s not freedom when you want to deny a woman’s right to health care,” Healey said. “If they’re going to come after the freedom of our own body, there’s not freedom that they’re not going to come after.”

The presidential race is tight in the Granite State. A recent UNH poll found New Hampshire voters favoring Harris by five percentage points but split over which candidate they think is most likely to win the entire election — 42% think it will be Harris while another 42% think it will be Trump; 15% were not sure.

“There’s a lot of people around the country right now — they’re not feeling it. They’re pissed off at politics. They’re pissed off at politicians. They don’t think that anyone’s there for them,” Healey said. “I get that. And you know who else gets that? Kamala Harris and Tim Walz get that.”

While Ayotte was just ahead of Craig in the most recent UNH poll, Republicans said they were confident many of their nominees for Congress, who have been trailing in polls, will come through and even pull some upsets.

“I think it’ll be a landslide victory,” said Republican Richard Griffith, who has draped his pickup truck in all kinds of political flags.

The 73-year-old believes he speaks for a silent majority in New Hampshire looking to upset the establishment and bring a more conservative government led by Trump.

New Hampshire Republican State Committee Chair Chris Ager was trying to court undecided voters on the last day before the election by reminding them of what he calls “kitchen table” issues like the price of gas, education and transportation, which he links directly to the Biden-Harris administration.

“You could see a surprise on Election Day because the polls may say one thing but we may be able to achieve something better,” Ager said.

GOP candidate Russell Prescott is hearing a similar message from voters in Congressional District 1 – a seat currently held by Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas.

“We’re going to have a lot of people coming out that have never voted before. We’re going to have the largest turnout here in New Hampshire and we really are going to make a change,” Prescott said.

Lily Tang-Williams, who immigrated from China at age 27, is also hoping for an upset in her race, District 2, where polls show Maggie Goodlander ahead, by connecting with an electorate that, like her, feels disenfranchised.

“If people want to have a safe quality of life, live the American Dream and have peace and free speech, they should vote up and down Republican,” she said.

New Hampshire is a same-day registration state, so anyone who’s not registered can show up at the polls on Election Day with their ID and register to vote.

Elected officials urged everyone to get to the ballot box Tuesday because they said this is the most important election of our lifetime.

“Democracy is the exception in the history of the world, not the rule,” said New Hampshire Sen. Maggie Hassan, who is not up for reelection this year. “Keep knocking, keep talking, this is our democracy. Americans believe in each other in freedom. We’re gonna move forward. Go get ’em everybody!”

The last time Trump tried to overturn his election loss, the Proud Boys played a critical role, jumping into action on Jan. 6 just weeks after Trump gave the group a major recruitment boost by telling it to “stand back and stand by” during a presidential debate. The group, which was “thirsting for violence and organizing for action,” sent members to the Capitol to act as “Donald Trump’s army,” federal prosecutors said later. Several Proud Boys leaders were ultimately convicted of seditious conspiracy and are still in prison, including former chairman Enrique Tarrio, who is serving 22 years, the longest sentence given to any Jan. 6 defendant.

But the decentralized all-male far-right group remains active around the country, and some of its members are openly making plans to get involved in Tuesday’s elections, as Trump closes his campaign by talking about shooting through the media; calls his political opponents “evil,” “dangerous” and “the enemy within”; and spreads more baseless predictions of election fraud.

At least 30 of the 34 active and public Telegram channels operated by Proud Boys chapters across the country have once again been rallying support for Trump, posting pro-Trump content since the beginning of October, according to an analysis by Advance Democracy, a nonprofit research organization. Many groups are posting memes and content that suggest that the 2024 election will be stolen from Trump.

Two Proud Boys chapters, both based in Ohio, say they’ll be watching the polls on Election Day, according to posts reviewed by NBC News. The Proud Boys of Columbus recently posted a claim that they had enrolled members as poll watchers and poll workers.

“The task is simply too important to trust to regular normies,” a post reposted Monday read, “so it was an all-hands-on-deck effort.”

Another Proud Boys group in Ohio recently posted that it was “watching polls everywhere” ahead of Election Day.

“Locked, loaded, and ready for treasonous voter fraud,” an account wrote Sunday before it added an anti-gay slur. “Stand back and stand by f—–s.”

Three other Proud Boys Telegram channels elsewhere in the country have also shared an image of a masked man holding a gun with the words “FREE MEN DO NOT OBEY PUBLIC SERVANTS” emblazoned over him, the report from Advance Democracy found.

The Proud Boys’ chapters and other active militia groups have not, as of Monday, made explicit public calls to interfere in Tuesday’s elections, Advance Democracy and an NBC News review of social media posts show. And it’s not clear whether claims that they are watching the polls or are embedded as election volunteers will result in any real-world action.

But Proud Boys members are clearly active. NBC News spotted men dressed in the Proud Boys uniform — gold-collared black polos — in a section at a Trump rally on Sunday, but it wasn’t clear whether the people had previously been identified as men associated with the group. NBC News observed Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., nearby and avoiding taking photos with the men.

Harris and Trump's final push before Election Day brings them to the same patch of Pennsylvania

The Proud Boys chapters are decentralized, but they’ve spent the time since Jan. 6 wedging themselves into other right-wing issues. Members of the group have shown up at school board meetings over library books, as well as anti-LGBTQ demonstrations and anti-immigration protests, and, although they have been weakened, Proud Boys could still organize around the election.

What happens depends largely on how Trump performs. Eight years ago, during Trump’s 2016 run for president, the founder of another right-wing organization announced a plan to go “undercover” at polling places, saying he would go “incognito” and “blend in” with the public.

Trump won in 2016. Four years later, that founder, Stewart Rhodes and his group, the Oath Keepers, went on to participate in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Rhodes was convicted of seditious conspiracy and is serving 18 years behind bars.

The Proud Boys messages were sent over Telegram, which has become the preferred platform of far-right groups, where they can spread their content freely. It has become a hotbed of election misinformation and conspiracy theories.

Federal authorities have been swift to strike down misinformation from foreign actors during this cycle, but they face restraints — because of both law and tradition — when it comes to striking down misinformation that emerges from American-based political entities, and federal authorities play only a limited role in overseeing elections.

Trump — who was indicted by a federal grand jury and accused of using false voting fraud claims to try to overturn his election loss in 2020 — has a long history of making false claims about the election, even tweeting after Mitt Romney’s loss in 2012 that Americans needed “a revolution” and that Americans should “fight like hell,” the phrase he would invoke on Jan. 6.

Heading into Tuesday, he has increasingly used authoritarian language that invokes violent images: telling Capitol attack conspiracy theorist and former Fox News host Tucker Carlson that House Jan. 6 committee Vice Chairwoman Liz Cheney wouldn’t be such a “war hawk” if she had guns “trained on her face” and saying he wouldn’t “mind that so much” if a theoretical attempted assassin were to “shoot through the fake news.”

In Pittsburgh, Trump delivered what his campaign aides described as his closing argument after his previous attempt — a mass rally at Madison Square Garden in New York — was derailed by crude and racist jokes. He has also veered off message with falsehoods about voter fraud and invocations of violence.

“Over the past four years, Americans have suffered one catastrophic failure, betrayal and humiliation after another,” said the Republican nominee, sounding raspy yet energetic after speaking for hours each day.

“We do not have to settle for weakness, incompetence, decline and decay,” he went on. “With your vote tomorrow, we can fix every single problem our country faces and lead America, and indeed the while world, to new heights of glory.”

The crowd exploded in cheers when the Republican nominee said the country should tell Harris, “You’re fired,” his catchphrase from “The Apprentice,” the reality television show that made him a nationally recognized star.

Trump started Monday in North Carolina and he’s scheduled to hold his last rally of the election in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he concluded his 2016 and 2020 campaigns.

Harris, the Democratic nominee, is spending all of Monday in Pennsylvania, and she was en route to Pittsburgh while Trump was speaking there. She’s holding her final rally in Philadelphia later in the evening.

“We need everyone in Pennsylvania to vote,” she said during one of her campaign stops. “You are going to make the difference in this election.”

With 19 Electoral College votes, the state is the biggest prize of any battleground. A Trump victory there would puncture the Democrats’ “blue wall” and make it harder for Harris to win the necessary 270 votes.

“If we win Pennsylvania, we win the whole ball of wax,” Trump said during an event in Reading, in the state’s southeast corner.

Both candidates visited the area, which is home to thousands of Latinos, including a sizable Puerto Rican population. Harris and her allies have repeatedly hit Trump for a comedian’s dig at Puerto Rico during the former president’s marquee Madison Square Garden event. The comedian, Tony Hinchcliffe, referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.”

“It was absurd,” said German Vega, a Dominican American who lives in Reading and became a U.S. citizen in 2015. “It bothered so many people — even many Republicans. It wasn’t right, and I feel that Trump should have apologized to Latinos.”

But Emilio Feliciano, 43, waited outside Reading’s Santander Arena for a chance to take a photo of Trump’s motorcade. He dismissed the comments about Puerto Rico despite his family being Puerto Rican, saying he cares about the economy and that’s why he will vote for Trump.

“Is the border going to be safe? Are you going to keep crime down? That’s what I care about,” he said.

Harris told the crowd, “I stand here proud of my long-standing commitment to Puerto Rico and her people.”

“And I will be a president for all Americans,” she said, adding that “momentum is on our side. Can you feel it?”

Trump, meanwhile, stuck to talking about his proposed crackdown on immigration. He called to the stage Patty Morin, the mother of 37-year-old Rachel Morin, who was found dead a day after she went missing during a trip to go hiking. Officials say the suspect in her death, Victor Antonio Martinez Hernandez, entered the U.S. illegally after allegedly killing a woman in his home country of El Salvador.

About 77 million Americans have voted early. A victory by either side would be unprecedented.

Trump winning would make him the first incoming president to have been indicted and convicted of a felony, after his hush-money trial in New York. He will gain the power to end other federal investigations pending against him. Trump would also become only the second president in history to win nonconsecutive White House terms, after Grover Cleveland in the late 19th century.

Harris is vying to become the first woman, first Black woman and first person of South Asian descent to reach the Oval Office — four years after she broke the same barriers in national office by becoming President Joe Biden’s second in command.

Heading into Monday, Harris has mostly stopped mentioning Trump by name, calling him instead “the other guy.” She is promising to solve problems and seek consensus.

Harris campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon said on a call with reporters that not saying Trump’s name was deliberate because voters “want to see in their leader an optimistic, hopeful, patriotic vision for the future.”

Harris also offered some insights into her personal formation as a politician that she doesn’t often divulge. In Scranton, she talked about once being a longshot while running for San Francisco district attorney in 2002 and how she “used to campaign with my ironing board.”

“I’d walk to the front of the grocery store, outside, and I would stand up my ironing board because, you see, an ironing board makes a really great standing desk,” the vice president said, recalling how she would tape her posters to the outside of the board, fill the top with flyers and “require people to talk to me as they walked in and out.”

In Allentown, Harris rallied with rapper Fat Joe. She then made her own visit to Reading after Trump’s rally had concluded, visiting Old San Juan Cafe, a Puerto Rican restaurant, with Ocasio-Cortez. Both Fat Joe, whose real name is Joseph Cartagena, and Ocasio-Cortez are of Puerto Rican heritage.

Supporters chanted “Sí se puede” and “Kamala” as the vice president’s motorcade pulled up. Once inside, Harris chatted with some diners, even mixing in “Gracias” and a few Spanish words. The vice president later ordered cassava, yellow rice and pork, saying, “I’m very hungry” as she noted that she’s been too busy campaigning to find time for many meals.

Harris did some of her own canvassing afterward, stopping at two homes in Reading while flanked by campaign volunteers.

“It’s the day before the election and I just wanted to come by and say I hope to earn your vote,” she said at one house.

The woman replied, “You already got my vote” and said her husband would be casting his ballot the next day.

Standing in line for Harris’ Allentown rally, 54-year-old Ron Kessler, an Air Force veteran and Republican-turned-Democrat, said he planned to vote for just the second time in his life. Kessler said that, for a long time, he didn’t vote, thinking the country “would vote for the correct candidate.”

But “now that I’m older and much more wiser, I believe it’s important, it’s my civic duty. And it’s important that I vote for myself and I vote for the democracy and the country.”

Police confirmed they responded to the crash on Colonel Bell Drive around 12:45 p.m. The victim, a 70-year-old woman, had severe injuries.

She was rushed with a tourniquet on her leg to Boston Medical Center, where she was in stable condition Monday evening, police said.

State police were investigating the crash, according to Brockton police, who didn’t say if anyone would face charges for what happened.

At least the temperatures don’t seem to mind, right? Although we’re shrouded in clouds and chilly temperatures on Monday, we’re staring at another warmup in the coming days. Highs soar (again) from the 50s to the 70s by midweek, when we challenge records in both Boston and Worcester.

This will count as our sixth major warmup (followed by a cooldown) since late September! A remarkable stretch indeed. Gusty winds will accompany the warm weather. This will heighten the fire danger throughout the Commonwealth, but it will also help disperse the smoke that’s been smothering the North Shore.

The next drop in temps late week will be at the hands of a new batch of cool air. What’s different about this cool shot is how it comes with an increased risk of showers – something that could derail any subsequent warmup.

We’ll have to see how it pans out, but the warmup/cooldown streak could be coming to an abrupt end and we may be able to muster more than just a “passing sprinkle” as the pattern switches up in the next 7-10 days.

Behavior like Steven Stanganelli’s is neither condoned nor tolerated by the city, a spokesman said in a statement to NBC10 Boston, without sharing what it was. The Newburyport News reported that it involved a parade of Donald Trump supporters in the city’s downtown.

Stanganelli, 59, was seen by officers acting disorderly, according to a news release from Amesbury police, who also did not share more details about what the incident involved. He was arraigned Monday morning in Newburyport District Court.

The office of Amesbury’s mayor released this statement in response to a request for comment: “We understand that this is a very polarized time in politics and that emotions are running high as we prepare for the election on Tuesday. However, the city of Amesbury does not tolerate or condone behavior such as what took place on Saturday, regardless of the political climate. Any disciplinary actions against Mr. Stanganelli regarding his seat on the council would come from City Council, the legislative branch, and is not the purview of the executive branch led by the mayor.”

A not guilty plea was entered on Stanganelli’s behalf at a brief arraignment, where he said he was looking into hiring an attorney. He’s due back in court for a Dec. 11 hearing.

NBC10 Boston has reached out to Stanganelli for comment.

Common Pleas Court Judge Angelo Foglietta — ruling after Musk’s lawyers said the winners are not chosen by chance — did not immediately give a reason for the ruling.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner had called the sweepstakes a scam that violates state election law and asked that it be shut down.

The winners of the sweepstakes did not win by chance but are instead paid spokespeople for the group, Musk’s lawyers said in court Monday.

Musk lawyer Chris Gober said the final two recipients before Tuesday’s presidential election will be in Arizona on Monday and Michigan on Tuesday.

“The $1 million recipients are not chosen by chance,” Gober said Monday. “We know exactly who will be announced as the $1 million recipient today and tomorrow.”

Chris Young, the director of America PAC, testified that the recipients are vetted ahead of time, to “feel out their personality, (and) make sure they were someone whose values aligned” with the group.

The disclosures prompted a lawyer for District Attorney Larry Krasner to call the effort a “scam” that is “designed to actually influence a national election.”

Musk’s lawyers, in closing arguments, called it “core political speech” given that participants sign a petition endorsing the U.S. Constitution. They said Krasner’s legal bid to shut down the sweepstakes under Pennsylvania law was moot because there would be no more Pennsylvania winners before the program ends Tuesday.

Krasner believes the giveaways violates state election law and contradict what Musk promised when he announced them during an appearance with Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump ‘s campaign in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 19: “We’re going to be awarding a million dollars randomly to people who have signed the petition every day from now until the election,” Musk vowed.

Young also acknowledged that the PAC made the recipients sign nondisclosure agreements.

“They couldn’t really reveal the truth about how they got the money, right?” asked Krasner lawyer John Summers.

“Sounds right,” Young said.

In an Oct. 20 social media post shown in court, Musk said anyone signing the petition had “a daily chance of winning $1M!”

Summers grilled him on Musk’s use of both the words “chance” and “randomly,” prompting Young, who also serves as the PAC’s treasurer, to concede the latter was not “the word I would have selected.”

Young said the winners knew they would be called on stage but not specifically that they would win the money.

Musk did not attend the hearing. He has committed more than $70 million to the super PAC to help Trump and other Republicans win in November.

“This was all a political marketing masquerading as a lottery,” Krasner testified Monday morning. “That’s what it is. A grift.”

Lawyers for Musk and the PAC said they do not plan to extend the lottery beyond Tuesday. Krasner said the first three winners, starting on Oct. 19, came from Pennsylvania in the days leading up to the state’s Oct. 21 voter registration deadline.

Other winners came from the battleground states of Wisconsin, Nevada, Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina and Michigan. It’s not clear if anyone has yet received the money. The PAC pledged they would get it by Nov. 30, according to an exhibit shown in court.

More than 1 million people from the seven states have registered for the sweepstakes by signing a petition saying they support the right to free speech and to bear arms, the first two amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Krasner questioned how the PAC might use their data, which it will have on hand well past the election.

“They were scammed for their information,” Krasner said. “It has almost unlimited use.”

Krasner’s lawyer, John Summers, said Musk is “the heartbeat of America PAC,” and the person announcing the winners and presenting the checks.

“He was the one who presented the checks, albeit large cardboard checks. We don’t really know if there are any real checks,” Summers said.

Common Pleas Court Judge Angelo Foglietta was presiding over the case at Philadelphia City Hall after Musk and the PAC lost an effort to move it to federal court.

Krasner has said he could still consider criminal charges, as he’s tasked with protecting both lotteries and the integrity of elections. In the lawsuit, he said the defendants are “indisputably violating” Pennsylvania’s lottery laws.

Pennsylvania remains a key battleground state with 19 electoral votes and both Trump and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris have repeatedly visited the state, including stops planned Monday in the final hours of the campaign.

Krasner — who noted that he has long driven a Tesla — said he could also seek civil damages for the Pennsylvania registrants. Musk is the CEO and largest shareholder of Tesla. He also owns the social media platform X, where America PAC has published posts on the sweepstakes, and the rocket ship maker SpaceX.

Now, she wants them to put their money where their mouth is.

Raygun, who went viral during the inaugural Olympic breaking competition in Paris, partnered with Finder Australia for a new contest challenging dancers to show off their moves.

“I’ve heard some of you can do better than me,” Raygun said in a joint Instagram post with Finder Australia. “Really? Let’s find out, shall we?”

Contestants can use Raygun’s signature moves like the “kangaroo hop” or do their own to the “Finder Beat.” Breakers need to upload their video to TikTok or Instagram, use the hashtag #RaygunChallenge and tag Finder Australia to enter.

Instead of gold, silver and bronze medals, the best solo dancer will walk away with $5,000 AUD and the best group dance will earn $10,000 AUD.

The submission deadline is 11:59 p.m. AEDT (8 a.m. ET) on Monday, Nov. 11. Finalists will be announced on Nov. 14, and fan voting will take place for the following week before winners are announced at 12 p.m. AEDT on Nov. 22.

These sleeper races could determine which party wins a majority in the House or Senate, which will have a substantial impact on the next president’s agenda. They will be decided by a mix of factors, including voter turnout and whether the candidates have a unique ability to defy the broader political winds.

Here are nine races for Congress where one side should be clearly favored, but appears to have a battle on their hands.

Texas Senate: Cruz fights to hang on

Democrats need a miracle to maintain control of the Senate, and Texas may be their best chance to do so. Democratic Rep. Colin Allred is giving the polarizing Republican Sen. Ted Cruz a run for his money, presenting him as a do-nothing extremist.

Cruz is casting Allred as too liberal for Texas by highlighting issues like transgender rights and energy production. The two-term incumbent is still favored in the GOP stronghold, though some surveys show his lead over Allred within the margin of error.

Cruz has sounded the alarm, pleading with conservative donors to send him more money to fend off an onslaught from Allred and his Democratic allies. There’s added intrigue as Cruz underperformed in his last Senate race in 2018, fending off former Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke by less than 3 points.

Nebraska Senate: Populist upstart spooks GOP

This race was never supposed to be on the radar. But Dan Osborn — a 48-year-old mechanic, union leader and Navy veteran — has made a splash with his independent run as a populist outsider.

Osborn substantially outraised two-term Republican Sen. Deb Fischer and launched buzzy ads vowing to upend the status quo. In one ad, he says the Senate is made up of “millionaires controlled by billionaires” and knocks Fischer as a career politician who is failing to deliver for Nebraska and only in Congress to enrich herself.

High-quality statewide polls are rare, but available surveys show Osborn leading narrowly in some and Fischer ahead in others. Fischer remains favored in this ruby-red state, but what should have been a layup for her is now a real fight. Republicans have sent in the cavalry, pouring millions to tarnish Osborn as a left-wing Trojan horse who would strip away Senate control from the GOP. Osborn says he won’t caucus with either party if elected.

Maryland Senate: Can Hogan defy gravity?

Republican Larry Hogan won two races for governor of Maryland in 2014 and 2018, defying gravity in the deep-blue state. Now he’s trying his hand at a more challenging task: becoming the first Republican to win a Maryland Senate seat since 1980.

Hogan is a heavy underdog in a state that Joe Biden won in 2020 by a whopping 33 points, where a focus on federal issues and growing party polarization make it tough for him.

He is trying to ride the moderate image that served him well in his races for governor. His rival Angela Alsobrooks, a first-time federal candidate and the former Prince George’s County executive, is reminding voters about Hogan’s veto of abortion access legislation and highlighting the stakes for which party controls the Senate.

Polls indicate that Hogan is dramatically overperforming Trump in Maryland, but still trails Alsobrooks.

Florida Senate: Can Democrats oust Rick Scott?

Florida is rapidly falling off the map for Democrats, and Trump is widely expected to carry it at the presidential level. But in the party’s search for an upset victory on a tough Senate map, some Democrats are holding out hope they can knock out Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla.

Scott, a former governor, has shown an uncanny ability to squeak out statewide wins by the slimmest of margins in Florida, including during the red waves of 2010 and 2014 and the blue wave of 2018.

His rival, former Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, D-Fla., has largely focused on reproductive rights. Democrats hope some of Scott’s hard-right views will alienate moderates, and that a ballot measure to enshrine abortion access in the state constitution will help boost turnout on their side. Still, he remains the favorite.

Pennsylvania’s 10th District: Former Freedom Caucus leader faces a serious threat

This race has all the elements of a shocker in the works, with Rep. Scott Perry, a far-right incumbent in a moderately GOP-leaning district, facing the fight of his political career against Democrat Janelle Stelson, a former TV news anchor who is well known in the area.

Stelson has crept up on Perry by raising eye-popping sums of money and portraying the former chair of the right-wing Freedom Caucus as out of touch with the district. Republicans are spending money to protect Perry, and he has responded by walking back some of his controversial positions, such as endorsing cuts to Social Security benefits.

The Cook Political Report With Amy Walter recently redesignated this formerly GOP-leaning race as a “toss-up.”

Virginia’s 2nd District: An early bellwether of how Republicans are holding up

First-term Rep. Jen Kiggans, R-Va., is facing a challenge from Democrat Missy Cotter Smasal after a redrawn and more Republican-friendly district helped her knock off a Democratic incumbent by about 3 points in 2022.

Virginia will be among the first states on the East Coast where polls will close the night of the election, so the results in this district will be viewed as a bellwether for whether Republicans are holding their ground in the types of districts they need to maintain the House majority. If Democrats flip it, it means they’re probably on their way to a good night.

Wisconsin’s 3rd District: A controversial GOP freshman tries to hang on

GOP Rep. Derrick Van Orden made plenty of headlines during his first two years in Washington, between hurling obscenities at Senate pages and heckling Biden during his State of the Union address.

He’s favored in a red-leaning district previously held by centrist Democratic Rep. Ron Kind. But some Democrats see a tantalizing opportunity to persuade enough voters to split their tickets and deliver an upset. Democrat Rebecca Cooke is trying to do that by running as a moderate and an acceptable alternative in the district.

Texas’ 34th District: A test of whether Latinos are drifting toward the GOP

In a year of shifting coalitions, this heavily Latino district highlights a dynamic that could shape the 2024 election. Democratic Rep. Vicente Gonzalez is looking to hang on against Mayra Flores, a Mexican-born millennial who has promoted far-right rhetoric and is seeking to channel a resistance to transgender rights.

Gonzalez is favored in this Democratic-friendly district, but surveys show Trump could make gains with Latino voters. The size of those gains, and whether the district has the appetite to be represented by a MAGA-aligned Latina, could potentially produce a shocker.

California’s 47th District: Republicans eye an open seat in Newport Beach

Two-term Rep. Katie Porter vacated this Orange County district to launch an unsuccessful run for Senate. The Republican candidate is Scott Baugh, a former California state legislator and Orange County GOP chair who lost to Porter by less than 4 points 2022. The Democrat is state Sen. Dave Min, who made headlines early in his bid by getting cited for misdemeanor drunk driving.

California is emerging as a bright spot for House Democrats this cycle. If the GOP wants to dent their gains, this Newport Beach-area district — a onetime Republican stronghold that trended blue in the era of Trump — may be their best shot at flipping a district.

Hollis police said they received a report around 6:15 p.m. Sunday of a motor vehicle accident in which a bear was hit at Broad Street near Pine Hill Road. When they arrived, officers determined that the bear had died.

The driver of the vehicle who struck the bear, 30-year-old Timothy Harrigan, of Leominster, was charged with driving under the influence aggravated, driving under the influence and an open container violation after police detected signs of impairment and investigated further.

Police said the aggravated driving under the influence charge is due to the fact that at the time of the crash, Harrigan allegedly had a Blood Alcohol Content of .17, which is more than double the legal limit of .08.

Harrigan was processed and released on personal recognizance bail and is scheduled to be arraigned in Nashua District Court at a later date.

Harrigan arranged for a ride from the police station, but his ride, 29-year-old Sarah Chicoine, of Nashua, was found to be operating on a suspended license and suspended registrations, according to police. She was issued a summons to appear in Nashua District Court on those charges.

A truck carrying portable toilets driving on Memorial Drive in Cambridge on Monday morning struck the Massachusetts Avenue overpass, knocking two porta-potties off the truck and depositing them smack in the middle of morning traffic.

The truck initially left the scene, but returned about 20 minutes later.

No injuries were reported.

Boston police said they responded at 3:51 a.m. to a report of a crash between a motorcycle and another motor vehicle at 1112 Hyde Park Ave.

One person was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died, police said. A second person was taken to a local hospital but is expected to survive.

The crash remains under investigation by homicide detectives and the department’s fatal collision team.

No further details were released.

Yarmouth fire officials posted an update on Facebook saying the fire’s cause remains undetermined and is currently under investigation. They said fire crews remain on scene Monday morning.

The fire department said it received a call around 6:30 p.m. Sunday from a passerby reporting a structure fire on Route 6A at the former Anthony’s Cummaquid Inn, which has been closed for several years. When firefighters arrived at the scene they saw heavy flames from Route 6A and called in fire crews from several neighboring communities.

The fire had advanced quickly through the structure and was threatening other buildings on the property, along with brush near the original building. Even more fire crews were called in to help keep the fire from spreading.

Video from the scene showed a huge fire raging at the former business, with flames and smoke visible for miles around.

Fire officials said crews worked for several hours to bring the fire under control.

There were no civilian injuries, but one firefighter was evaluated on scene for a minor injury.

Secretary of State William Galvin discussed current and anticipated voter turnout and other matters relating to Tuesday’s election at a media availability Monday. Galvin said so far they’ve seen a “remarkable” response to early voting, with about 1.7 million ballots already returned. He expects, based on what officials have seen so far, that after Election Day turnout will surpass the record of nearly 3.7 million set in 2020.

Galvin also noted his office is not aware of any particular threats at the polls, but he felt it was important, given the current political climate, to reaffirm “the basic honesty and integrity of those who conduct elections in our country.”

“I think I can tell you that the people who administer elections in the United States are people of integrity, they are honest people and the tallies they present are honest tallies,” Galvin said.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and Elections Commissioner Eneida Tavares also spoke during virtual media briefing to share updates on the city’s election preparations.

As of Nov. 1, 20.8% of Boston’s 438,000 registered voters have already cast a ballot, Tavares said. They are anticipating significant voter turnout on Election Day. The Election Department has a language assistant line that poll workers can call into for any voters who need help at their polling location, if no one at the location speaks the language.

Gov. Maura Healey will be in New Hampshire on Monday campaigning for Democratic governor’s candidate Joyce Craig.

On Saturday morning, a pickup truck went off Interstate 495 and slammed right into a tree, splitting it in half.

Two people were killed and two others were taken to the hospital.

The Essex District Attorney’s Office said the other driver in this crash, 26-year-old Katrina Nguyen, turned herself in to Lawrence police. She’s now facing several charges, including two counts of motor vehicle homicide.

According to officials, Nguyen was involved in the fatal collision that occurred shortly after 6 a.m. Saturday on I-495 northbound. She was not at the scene when first responders arrived.

Prosecutors allege that Nguyen was out at a Halloween party, then a lounge in Lawrence until closing, and then another Halloween party before the crash and had been drinking. Officers noted she smelled like alcohol when she arrived at the police station for questioning. She also had a suspended license, despite working as an Uber driver. 

Ngunyen was identified as a suspect when a witness called police with the vehicle’s registration information after the crash.

The witness told police that Nguyen sped past the victims’ truck going 90 – 100 mph and then her vehicle turned abruptly making a sharp left turn into the pickup truck, causing it to roll over and hit the median and a tree. 

Massachusetts State Police troopers and Methuen Fire personnel responded to a 911 call and found several people trapped inside the heavily-damaged pickup, which hit a tree alongside the highway.

One occupant inside the truck, a 37-year-old man, was pronounced dead on scene, officials said. Another occupant, a 41-year-old man, was taken to Lawrence General Hospital, where he died from his injuries. Their names haven’t been released at this time pending family notifications.

Two other truck occupants were freed from the truck and taken to Lawrence General with non-life threatening injuries, officials said.

Nguyen’s bail was set at $200,000 and conditions of release include GPS tracking and home confinement, no driving, and remaining alcohol free. She is due for a virtual pretrial hearing on Nov. 26, 2024.

We’ll see how things shake out this month, but our hot/cold streak may be cut short after this major two-day warmup. It seems the pattern will even out going into the weekend.

One of the big features in the long term is the potential increase in rain. While I don’t see drought-busting storms heading our way, the frequency of the rain chances increases in days 7-10 of the 10-day forecast.

As a result of this, we’ll have to battle through clouds and contend with a wetter landscape. Recall that with dry ground our temperatures are vulnerable to big swings. Dry ground easily warms and easily cools. Add a little water to the soil and it’s harder to heat up and easier to stay cool.

In the short term, records are in jeopardy by midweek. We’ll see highs soar to the mid-70s with a fair amount of clouds passing through as a front crosses. Temperatures drop later in the week/weekend with what appears to be our greatest threat for rain in over a month arriving by Sunday and Monday.

Jones’ publicist, Arnold Robinson, says he died Sunday night at his home in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles, surrounded by his family.

“Tonight, with full but broken hearts, we must share the news of our father and brother Quincy Jones’ passing,” the family said in a statement. “And although this is an incredible loss for our family, we celebrate the great life that he lived and know there will never be another like him.”

Jones rose from running with gangs on the South Side of Chicago to the very heights of show business, becoming one of the first Black executives to thrive in Hollywood and amassing an extraordinary musical catalog that includes some of the richest moments of American rhythm and song. For years, it was unlikely to find a music lover who did not own at least one record with his name on it, or a leader in the entertainment industry and beyond who did not have some connection to him.

Jones kept company with presidents and foreign leaders, movie stars and musicians, philanthropists and business leaders. He toured with Count Basie and Lionel Hampton, arranged records for Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, composed the soundtracks for “Roots” and “In the Heat of the Night,” organized President Bill Clinton’s first inaugural celebration and oversaw the all-star recording of “We Are the World,” the 1985 charity record for famine relief in Africa.

Lionel Richie, who co-wrote “We Are the World” and was among the featured singers, would call Jones “the master orchestrator.”

In a career which began when records were still played on vinyl at 78 rpm, top honors likely go to his productions with Jackson: “Off the Wall,” “Thriller” and “Bad” were albums near-universal in their style and appeal. Jones’ versatility and imagination helped set off the explosive talents of Jackson as he transformed from child star to the “King of Pop.” On such classic tracks as “Billie Jean” and “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” Jones and Jackson fashioned a global soundscape out of disco, funk, rock, pop, R&B and jazz and African chants. For “Thriller,” some of the most memorable touches originated with Jones, who recruited Eddie Van Halen for a guitar solo on the genre-fusing “Beat It” and brought in Vincent Price for a ghoulish voiceover on the title track.

“Thriller” sold more than 20 million copies in 1983 alone and has contended with the Eagles’ “Greatest Hits 1971-1975” among others as the best-selling album of all time.

“If an album doesn’t do well, everyone says ‘it was the producers fault’; so if it does well, it should be your ‘fault,’ too,” Jones said in an interview with the Library of Congress in 2016. “The tracks don’t just all of a sudden appear. The producer has to have the skill, experience and ability to guide the vision to completion.”

The list of his honors and awards fills 18 pages in his 2001 autobiography “Q”, including 27 Grammys at the time (now 28), an honorary Academy Award (now two) and an Emmy for “Roots.” He also received France’s Legion d’Honneur, the Rudolph Valentino Award from the Republic of Italy and a Kennedy Center tribute for his contributions to American culture. He was the subject of a 1990 documentary, “Listen Up: The Lives of Quincy Jones” and a 2018 film by daughter Rashida Jones. His memoir made him a best-selling author.

Born in Chicago in 1933, Jones would cite the hymns his mother sang around the house as the first music he could remember. But he looked back sadly on his childhood, once telling Oprah Winfrey that “There are two kinds of people: those who have nurturing parents or caretakers, and those who don’t. Nothing’s in between.” Jones’ mother suffered from emotional problems and was eventually institutionalized, a loss that made the world seem “senseless” for Quincy. He spent much of his time in Chicago on the streets, with gangs, stealing and fighting.

“They nailed my hand to a fence with a switchblade, man,” he told the AP in 2018, showing a scar from his childhood.

Music saved him. As a boy, he learned that a Chicago neighbor owned a piano and he soon played it constantly himself. His father moved to Washington state when Quincy was 10 and his world changed at a neighborhood recreation center. Jones and some friends had broken into the kitchen and helped themselves to lemon meringue pie when Jones noticed a small room nearby with a stage. On the stage was a piano.

“I went up there, paused, stared, and then tinkled on it for a moment,” he wrote in his autobiography. “That’s where I began to find peace. I was 11. I knew this was it for me. Forever.”

Within a few years he was playing trumpet and befriending a young blind musician named Ray Charles, who became a lifelong friend. He was gifted enough to win a scholarship at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, but dropped out when Hampton invited him to tour with his band. Jones went on to work as a freelance composer, conductor, arranger and producer. As a teen, he backed Billie Holiday. By his mid-20s, he was touring with his own band.

“We had the best jazz band on the planet, and yet we were literally starving,” Jones later told Musician magazine. “That’s when I discovered that there was music, and there was the music business. If I were to survive, I would have to learn the difference between the two.”

As a music executive, he overcame racial barriers by becoming a vice president at Mercury Records in the early ’60s. In 1971, he became the first Black musical director for the Academy Awards ceremony. The first movie he produced, “The Color Purple,” received 11 Oscar nominations in 1986. (But, to his great disappointment, no wins). In a partnership with Time Warner, he created Quincy Jones Entertainment, which included the pop-culture magazine Vibe and Qwest Broadcasting. The company was sold for $270 million in 1999.

“My philosophy as a businessman has always come from the same roots as my personal credo: take talented people on their own terms and treat them fairly and with respect, no matter who they are or where they come from,” Jones wrote in his autobiography.

He was at ease with virtually every form of American music, whether setting Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon” to a punchy, swinging rhythm and wistful flute or opening his production of Charles’ soulful “In the Heat of the Night” with a lusty tenor sax solo. He worked with jazz giants (Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Duke Ellington), rappers (Snoop Dogg, LL Cool J), crooners (Sinatra, Tony Bennett), pop singers (Lesley Gore) and rhythm and blues stars (Chaka Khan, rapper and singer Queen Latifah).

On “We are the World” alone, performers included Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen. He co-wrote hits for Jackson – “P.Y.T (Pretty Young Thing” – and Donna Summer – “Love Is in Control (Finger on the Trigger) – and had songs sampled by Tupac Shakur, Kanye West and other rappers. He even composed the theme song for the sitcom “Sanford and Son.”

Jones was a facilitator and maker of the stars. He gave Will Smith a key break in the hit TV show “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” which Jones produced, and through “The Color Purple” he introduced Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg to filmgoers. Starting in the 1960s, he composed more than 35 film scores, including for “The Pawnbroker,” “In the Heat of the Night” and “In Cold Blood.”

He called scoring “a multifaceted process, an abstract combination of science and soul.”

Jones’ work on the soundtrack for “The Wiz” led to his partnership with Jackson, who starred in the 1978 movie. In an essay published in Time magazine after Jackson’s death, in 2009, Jones remembered that the singer kept slips of paper on him that contained thoughts by famous thinkers. When Jones asked about the origins of one passage, Jackson answered “Socrates,” but pronounced it “SO-crayts.” Jones corrected him, “Michael, it’s SOCK-ra-tees.”

“And the look he gave me then, it just prompted me to say, because I’d been impressed by all the things I saw in him during the rehearsal process, ‘I would love to take a shot at producing your album,’” Jones recalled. “And he went back and told the people at Epic Records, and they said, `No way — Quincy’s too jazzy.’ Michael was persistent, and he and his managers went back and said, `Quincy’s producing the album.’ And we proceeded to make ‘Off the Wall.’ Ironically, that was one of the biggest Black-selling albums at the time, and that album saved all the jobs of the people saying I was the wrong guy. That’s the way it works.”

Tensions emerged after Jackson’s death. In 2013, Jones sued Jackson’s estate, claiming he was owed millions in royalties and production fees on some of the superstar’s greatest hits. In a 2018 interview with New York magazine, he called Jackson “as Machiavellian as they come” and alleged that he lifted material from others.

Jones was hooked on work and play, and at times suffered for it. He nearly died from a brain aneurysm in 1974 and became deeply depressed in the 1980s after “The Color Purple” was snubbed by Academy Awards voters; he never received a competitive Oscar. A father of seven children by five mothers, Jones described himself as a “dog” who had countless lovers around the world. He was married three times, his wives including the actor Peggy Lipton.

“To me, loving a woman is one of the most natural, blissful, life-enhancing — and dare I say, religious — acts in the world,” he wrote.

He was not an activist in his early years, but changed after attending the 1968 funeral of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and later befriending the Rev. Jesse Jackson. Jones was dedicated to philanthropy, saying “the best and only useful aspect of fame and celebrity is having a platform to help others.”

His causes included fighting HIV and AIDS, educating children and providing for the poor around the world. He founded the Quincy Jones Listen Up! Foundation to connect young people with music, culture and technology, and said he was driven throughout his life “by a spirit of adventure and a criminal level of optimism.”

“Life is like a dream, the Spanish poet and philosopher Federico Garcia Lorca said,” Jones wrote in his memoir. “Mine’s been in Technicolor, with full Dolby sound through THX amplification before they knew what these systems were.”

Along with Rashida, Jones is survived by daughters Jolie Jones Levine, Rachel Jones, Martina Jones, Kidada Jones and Kenya Kinski-Jones; son Quincy Jones III; brother Richard Jones and sisters Theresa Frank and Margie Jay.

Boston police say officers responded around 10:20 p.m. to the area of Tremont Street and Melnea Cass Boulevard for a report of a motor vehicle accident.

According to police, at least two victims were transported to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

Video from the scene shows a car with a badly-damaged front end, as well as an SUV that had overturned and come to a rest on its side.

Police haven’t said what caused the crash. No other information was immediately available.

The Yarmouth Fire Department confirmed to NBC10 Boston that crews were on scene for an active blaze at what used to be the location of Anthony’s Cummaquid Inn, at 2 Route 6A in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, near the Barnstable town line.

Video from the scene shows a fire raging at the former business, with flames and smoke apparently visible for miles.

There was no immediate word on any injuries, or what may have caused the fire.

Fire officials haven’t commented on the damages, either, but video shows the building appears to be a total loss, having burnt to the ground.

Drake Maye made some awesome plays throughout the afternoon, none better than his 5-yard touchdown pass to running back Rhamondre Stevenson to tie the score 17-17 as time expired in the fourth quarter. Maye scrambled around the pocket for almost 12 seconds before finding Stevenson in the end zone. Maye also was the team’s leading rusher with 95 yards on eight attempts (11.9 per carry).

Maye completed 29-of-41 pass attempts for 206 yards with one touchdown, two interceptions and a fumble lost. The three turnovers hurt, but there were enough impressive plays from Maye for fans to grow more optimistic about his future despite the 20-17 overtime defeat.

Maye has made four starts (five appearances) as a rookie. He has completed 68 percent of his passes for 770 yards with six touchdowns and four interceptions. Maye also has tallied 209 yards and another touchdown on the ground.

The No. 3 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft drew rave reviews from his teammates (and opponents) after Sunday’s game. Here’s a roundup of their comments about the rookie QB.

Davon Godchaux

Patriots defensive tackle Davon Godchaux played against Buffalo Bills star Josh Allen when the veteran QB was a rookie in 2018. Godchaux was a member of the Miami Dolphins at the time. He thinks Maye is better than Allen was as a rookie and could attract players to come to Foxboro.

“That’s young Josh Allen 2.0,” Godchaux told reporters, including Evan Lazar of Patriots.com. “He looks amazing. I love watching him on the sideline. … I tell the guys all the time that he plays like Josh Allen 2.0.

“I played Josh Allen in Miami his rookie year, and he didn’t look that good, and Josh Allen is a phenomenal player now. MVP-type player. Drake looks better than Josh did his rookie year.”

Kendrick Bourne

Patriots wide receiver Kendrick Bourne can’t remember being part of a longer play than Maye’s touchdown pass to Stevenson at the end of the fourth quarter.

“Drake is just phenomenal,” Bourne said, via our Phil Perry. “He keeps showing it, week in and week out. … When you have someone like that it encourages you to go harder. .. (That TD pass) was different. … That might’ve been the longest play I’ve ever been a part of.”

Bourne also is excited about Maye’s potential.

I think that’s the greatest thing about Drake: he’s doing things that you don’t really see at a young age. So I’m very excited. And I want to be better for him. I think everybody understands in our offensive room, that we have something in him that can make everybody better. … That’s somebody you want to follow.”

Christian Gonzalez

Similar to Maye, Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez is one of the team’s building blocks of the future. Gonzalez said postgame that he wasn’t surprised by Maye’s heroics at the end of regulation because he sees that all the time. Gonzalez goes up against the Maye-led offense every practice.

“That’s Drake. Nobody was surprised, honestly. He makes plays like that all the time,” Gonzalez said, via the Boston Herald’s Zack Cox.

Rhamondre Stevenson

Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson scored both of his team’s touchdowns against the Titans.

Jeffery Simmons

Titans defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, who sacked Maye once, also came away impressed with the rookie QB.
