LeBron James is seen wearing a safety pin on the Dec. 19, 2016, cover of Sports Illustrated

LeBron James has been on countless Sports Illustrated covers over the course of his illustrious career. But on his most recent cover photo for Sports Illustrated's Sportsperson of the Year award James is sporting a particular piece of hardware...and it's not his latest championship ring.

James is wearing a safety pin. Since last month's presidential election, the pin has become a symbol of solidarity with those Americans who fear they'll be disenfranchised by a Donald Trump presidency. The pin is intended to show that the wearer is a safe person to turn to.

James campaigned for Democrat Hillary Clinton in the days before the vote. During a recent road trip to play the New York Knicks, James opted to stay elsewhere than the team's official Trump-branded hotel in New York. He called the decision a personal preference.

Sports Illustrated tweeted a photo of the cover on Monday.
