Rock Star Jack White Surprises D.C. High School With Lunchtime Concert

He wanted to provide a memorable experience for students as the school year comes to a close

Rock star Jack White surprised some D.C. high school students with a lunchtime concert.

About 200 Wilson High School students got to see White perform with his band for about 45 minutes Wednesday afternoon.

After the performance, White spent time talking to students and giving away guitar picks.

White reached out to D.C. Public Schools about the concert, a DCPS spokesperson said. He wanted to provide a memorable experience for students as the school year comes to a close.

DCPS helped arrange the visit, choosing Wilson because of its focus on humanities, arts and media.

Among Wilson's alumni are a couple of icons of D.C.'s hardcore punk scene: Singer Ian MacKaye and drummer Jeff Nelson, who played in the Teen Idles while in high school and later went on to play in Minor Threat and launch the independent label Dischord Records.

Formerly of the duo The White Stripes, White is in town for two shows at The Anthem.
