Maine Candy Company Seeks Guinness Record With Giant Chocolate Lobster

A Maine candy company is seeking to break a Guinness World Record with a gigantic chocolate lobster.

To commemorate 100 years in business, Haven's Candies of Westbrook has unveiled "Shelby."

The extremely large crustacean, made of solid milk chocolate, is in honor of Shelby Putnam, who owned Haven's with his wife, Harris, from 1970 to 1990. He still works at the company as chief engineer.

"Shelby" is 418.1 pounds of mouth-watering goodness. The sculpture measures 90.5 inches from tip to tail and 47.75 inches claw to claw.

ACME Scale Company of Windham completed the official weigh-in, required by Guinness to certify the entry as a potential record holder.

"Shelby," who will be on display through Oct. 22 at the store, is hoping to claim fame as the "World's Largest Chocolate Sculpture." You can also see "Shelby" on display on Oct. 24 at the Maine Marketplace.
