Donald Trump was a controversial figure long before his unexpected rise through the ranks of American politics as a Washington outsider. A New York native, Trump made his fortune first in real estate, then by licensing the Trump brand and finally in reality television with “The Apprentice” and “The Celebrity Apprentice.” He had mulled a run for the Oval Office before, even vying for the Reform Party nomination in 1999 for a short time.
His presidential aspirations were realized with the 2016 campaign, when he beat a wide pool of candidates to become the Republican party’s presidential nominee, then defeated Hillary Clinton in the general election. He is the 45th president of the United States, and turned 72 shortly after his 500th day in office.
Here is a look at his personal and career milestones and controversies.
