Head of the Charles Expected to Draw $88M in Spending This Weekend

The Head of the Charles Regatta, the world’s largest two-day rowing contest with 11,000 participating athletes, could pull in an estimated $88 million in spending, according to an economic analysis.

The estimate comes from the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau and McKinsey & Co. Roughly 225,000 people are expected to descend on the Charles River on Saturday, Oct. 19 and Sunday, Oct. 20. The event is free to the public.

The spending from athletes, coaches and visitor on lodging, transportation, retail and other types of recreational tourism is slated to total over $70 million, with the remaining economic impact coming from the media, sponsors and event organizers.
