Two people died in a car crash involving two vehicles early Saturday morning in Saugus, Massachusetts.

MassDOT officials say the crash happened on Route 1 North in Saugus.

State Police say the accident took place around 3:30 a.m. as a wrong-way driver in a Chevy Impala, drove south in the northbound side of Route 1 in the area of a Sonic restaurant in Peabody. Moments later, the vehicle collided with another care near the Army Barracks store in Saugus.

Luis Gallego, 29, of Lynn, Massachusetts, the operator of the Chevy Impala was killed. Firefighters extinguished the flames from the Impala, which caught fire from the crash. According to police, Gallego first clipped the rear end of a box truck. The driver of the box truck was not injured.

Two other people inside a Dodge Journey SUV, were transported to area hospitals. A 51-year-old male Peabody resident went to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries. The female passenger was transported to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital where she was pronounced deceased. She was identified by state police Sunday as Evelyn Pinto, 48, of Peabody.

All three northbound lanes were closed as a result of the crash and reopened around 6 a.m.

The facts and circumstances of the crash, including the reason for the wrong-way operation, remain under investigation.
