13-Year-Old Boy Dies After Being Pulled From Worcester Pond

A 13-year-old boy has died after being pulled from a pond in Worcester, Massachusetts on Wednesday night, according to police.

Worcester police said they were called to Bell Pond at 8:09 p.m. for a report of a distressed swimmer. Upon arrival, an officer observed several people on the beach yelling that there was a boy missing in the water. Several people were already in the water searching for the missing boy.

The officer entered the water and formed a water line search with others at the scene but they were unable to locate the boy. A Worcester Fire scuba team arrived and located the boy in under four minutes in about 12 feet of water, 69 feet from shore. Police estimate that he had been underwater for about 15 minutes.

Life support measures were performed, and the boy was rushed to nearby UMass Memorial Medical Center. A pulse was restored and the boy began to breathe, but police said they were later informed that the boy had died around 2:50 a.m.

The teen's name has not been released pending the notification of family.

Police said there were four lifeguards working at the beach during the day, but their shifts ended their shift at 7 p.m.

Before they left, police said the lifeguards posted signs saying that the beach was closed for the remainder of the day. In addition to posting the signs, the lifeguards made sure everyone was out of the water and explained that the beach was closed.

The investigation is ongoing.
