16 Events Worth Checking Out in August

Happy August, BostInno readers! How has everyone been since our last monthly roundup? I’ve been pretty busy, because my wife and I welcomed our first child to the world a month ago! Millie is already a veteran of South End coffee houses and has even hit her first brewery. But while we’re home getting her to sleep for more than three hours at a time, there are a ton of great events happening in and around Boston in August. Here are 16 that caught my eye, and we’ll hopefully see you all out and about soon!

Pilates With Purpose

August 2 — 6:30 p.m. — Rose Kennedy Greenway, Wharf District Park — The Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy invites you to city’s most exciting green space to work out with local Pilates instructor Ali Baldassare of Equinox and North End Yoga fame. Ali will guide you through a 45-minute Pilates-cardio fusion class designed to strengthen your core, and improve your posture, flexibility and balance. The workout portion of the event is free free and open to the public, but attendees are also invited to Warehouse after for conversation and refreshments. $0-$25.

Char and Bar Wars

August 2 — 5 p.m. — University Park, Cambridge — Just when you thought we had reached Peak Food Festival, the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce has a brand new one for your taste buds. The first ever Char & Bar Wars will gather 20 of your favorite spots from around Cambridge to battle it out to see who has the best burger and cocktail in town. Grab a drink, chow down, and vote your favorites for Best Classic Burger, Best Signature Burger, Best Summer-themed Cocktail, and Best Bartender. $45.

Taste of the Caribbean Boston Food Festival

August 5 — 3 p.m. — Hibernian Hall — The Taste of the Caribbean Food Festival is an annual family-friendly event celebrating the delicious food, music, and cultural traditions traditions of the Caribbean. Guest will get to experience live entertainment, art exhibitions, and a diverse selection of cuisine. $15.

Roaring Twenties Lawn Party

August 5 and August 6 — 2 p.m. — Castle Hill on the Crane Estate — The 1920s roar again for a fabulous weekend of jazz, swing dance, antique automobiles, vintage clothes, house tours, lawn games, and more. Come Saturday or Sunday or make it a weekend and come both days. Throughout the weekend you’ll find swing dance and Charleston lessons, special performances by Boston Lindy Bomb Squad, Boston Lindy Hop, Eight Thirty ACT, and The Riff, and amazing New York and New Orleans jazz bands performing on two stages. New for 2017 are guided tours of the 1920s mansion. $40.

8-Bit Brunch

August 6 — 2 p.m. — GrandTen Distilling — Still bragging about your high score in Donkey Kong to no one in particular? Head to GrandTen Bar where every Sunday we they transfer their space into the coolest basement on the block. Shuffleboard, foosball tables, and board games are always available, but on Sundays they set up original Nintendo cartridges for play on their projector wall. During the month of August, you can catch the Oath Craft Pizza food truck posted up at their garage doors from 2 p.m. — 7 p.m. Free.

Whiskey Class: The Life & Times of a Cask

August 7 — 6 p.m. — The Smoke Shop BBQ — Sometimes a cask starts its life housing wine, sherry, rum, or port and ends its life aging whiskey. In this class that features four whiskies finished in casks, you will learn what the cask adds to the whiskey and why distillers create their product like this. Whiskies and appetizers included. The class will be held in the The Smoke Shop’s semi-private dining area and will be taught by resident whiskey expert Jordan McCusker. $48.15.

roofTOP Chefs

August 8 — 5:30 p.m. — Roof Top Pool at The Colonnade Hotel — roofTOP Chefs is a series created by The Colonnade Hotel’s Executive Chef Nick Calias, who has invited some talented friends to collaborate on a poolside tasting pop-up every Tuesday through September 13 with 100% of proceeds benefitting Share Our Strength No Kid Hungry. Each guest chef will whip up dishes of their own creation and Chef Calias will craft a complimentary dish or cocktail to pair, for a casual cookout-style atmosphere at the Colonnade’s famous rooftop pool. Rodney Murillo from Davio’s will be the featured chef on August 8. $30.

BostonFest 2017

August 9 — 6 p.m. — Lawn on D — We all know Boston is one of the best cities in the world to live, work and play. This summer, BostInno brings 2,000 of the Hub’s coolest young professionals together to enjoy the city we call home at BostonFest. From food truck favorites to local music, the best employers and beloved brands, BostonFest is BostInno’s can’t-miss celebration of everything we love most about the city. $25.

6th Annual Boston Seafood Festival

August 13 — 11 a.m. — Boston Fish Pier — The Boston Fisheries Foundation will host the 6th annual Boston Seafood Festival, where seafood lovers can enjoy the freshest, most delicious seafood from New England’s favorite dining destinations. This family-friendly event is not only an opportunity to enjoy a day of sensational seafood tastings but also to appreciate one of New England’s most important natural resources in a responsible and enjoyable way. The event include an all-day lobster bake, local chef demonstrations, live music, arts and crafts vendors, a blessing of the fleet, notable speakers, face painting, costumed characters, and more. $15.

5th Annual Bombshells Against Breast Cancer

August 16 — 5:30 p.m. — M.J. O’Connor’s Waterfront — Join the Bombshells of Boston on MJ O’Connor’s Waterfront patio to sip cold drinks, enjoy light bites, and raise money for the Ellie Fund. For the uninitiated, a Boston Bombshell is an influential woman in Boston who supports other woman in and out of the workplace through her attitude and actions. As is the case with more Ellie Fund events (The Ellie Fund provides essential support services for breast cancer patients to ease the stresses of everyday life) pink attire is suggested. $15.

Rum & Yoga Social

August 16 — 7:30 p.m. — Bully Boy Distillers — Did you know National Rum Day is in August? You do now! Come and celebrate this important holiday with Boston Yoga Instructor Kristin Khederian at Bully Boy’s new taproom. The class starts at 7:30pm with a detoxifying, all levels Vinyasa Yoga flow with Kristin, followed by some “re-tox” with delicious rum cocktails. The class will be held on Bully Boy’s production floor amongst their tanks, and Sweetgreen will be serving up complimentary salads for each participant. $35.

Brew at the Zoo

August 19 — 3:30 p.m. — Franklin Park Zoo — Attendees of the 8th annual Brew at the Zoo will get to take a walk on the wild side at Franklin Park Zoo while celebrating local breweries and restaurants. Stroll around the zoo while sipping on brews from over 35 different breweries and munching on goodies while visiting with western lowland gorillas, ring-tailed lemurs, pygmy hippos, and many, many more animals. Proceeds from Brew at the Zoo will support the operation and continued growth of Franklin Park Zoo, its education programs and conservation initiatives. $60 in advance.

Get Lei’d at Tapestry

August 20 — 2 p.m. — 69 Kilmarnock Street — Tapestry in Fenway is hosting an cheekily-named Aloha Party featuring Hawaiian cuisine such as Hawaiian Pizza along with Spam and pineapple dishes, tiki drinks, and live Island music performed by Big Party Orchestra. $5 cover charge, plus cash bar.

Milk Street Sessions: Gordon Hamersley

August 24 — 6 p.m. — 177 Milk Street — Most home cooks understandbly panic at the thought of cooking fish — the preparation, the cooking, and what to serve it with. Gordon Hamersley and Christopher Kimball, both avid cooks, hunters, and fishermen, team up for an evening of conversation and cooking, including a demonstration of the best way to prepare and cook fish. Chris will also interview Gordon about his career at the legendary Hamersley’s Bistro and get him to reveal the secret side of running a restaurant. $75.

Mei Mei Farm Dinner at Allandale Farm

August 27 — 6 p.m. — Allandale Farm — The folks who brought you The Double Awesome (my favorite Boston food truck item of all time) are throwing a farm dinner party with their friends at Allandale Farm in Chestnut Hill. Bring your friends and family for a multi-course picnic menu designed by James Beard-nominated chef Irene Li featuring lots of Allandale-grown produce. Tickets include one alcoholic drink (or non-alcoholic Haymaker’s Punch), and they’ll also have a cash bar. They’ll provide the picnic blankets, but feel free to bring your own too. $76.

“Aw Shucks” Hands-on Raw Bar with Red’s Best

August 31 — 6 p.m. — Boston Public Market — Close out the last day of August with two of your favorite things: shellfish and wine. Red’s Best will supply their fresh, local and sustainably-caught oysters, clams, and a variety of seasonal shellfish. One of their expert shuckers and seafood aficionados will guide participants through a shucking lesson. Attendees will get plenty to eat and will add oyster shucking to their arsenal of kitchen skills. While you’re shucking and slurping, Boston Public Market’s local wine expert will pour tastes of three different wines from Massachusetts wineries. $65.
