A quick-thinking neighbor's actions ultimately saved a family of three from a 2-alarm fire Friday that sparked in their Danvers, Massachusetts home.

The neighbor heard loud sounds and saw flames in the family's garage around 3:40 a.m. and moved fast to call 911.

"I got home around 2:30, relaxed for a bit then I heard some popping and thought my house was on fire," neighbor Brandon Jastrzembski said. "I saw orange outside and downstairs and looked outside and saw 20-foot flames coming out of the garage."

Fire crews rushed to the Lafayette Avenue residence and were able to wake the sleeping family before smoke filled the home. The home's fire alarm system rang shortly after firefighters made the rescue.

"Myself and another officer were able to get their attention by pounding on the front door, got them out of bed, and they made it out OK," said Danvers Fire Lt. Michael Delisio. "They couldn't smell smoke. They were shocked. They really didn't have any idea what was going on."

Crews were able to knock down the fire by 4:20 a.m.

The home's garage and vehicles were completely destroyed but the main part of the house was spared. No injuries were reported.

"I saw the car getting some flames under the hood so I wanted to make sure even the cops were behind the fire trucks in case something happened," said Jastrzembski.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Authorities are focusing their attention on the ground just outside the garage where the homeowner told NBC10 Boston he had a compost pile.

Despite the dame, the homeowner said he's thankful to have a neighbor like Jastrzembski looking out for him and his family.
