2 Men Accused of Stealing $50K Worth of Copper Wire From Along Highways

Massachusetts State Police have arrested two men they say stole 13,000 feet of copper wire worth $50,000 from along sections of Interstates 91 and 391 in the Springfield area.

Police started investigating last week after the state Transportation Department reported that thieves had forced their way through manhole covers along the highways, and gained access to the wires that supply power to the light poles.

In all, copper wire weighing about 2 ½ tons was stolen.

State and Springfield police this week arrested 42-year-old Luis Colon, of Springfield, and 19-year-old Alejandro Rodriguez, of Chicopee.

Both men face charges including receiving stolen property, larceny and conspiracy.
