7-Year-Old, One Other Person Shot in Boston

A 7-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man were shot in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood, police confirmed Sunday afternoon.

The beautiful afternoon on Bowdoin Street was shattered by five bullets. One struck Divan Silva, a young boy from Brockton, Massachusetts, who was visiting his grandmother for the holiday weekend.

He was riding his bicycle to a store to buy some tuna around 4:30 p.m. when he was hit in the rear end outside the Rodriguez Barber Shop.

A worker recorded video of the little boy being taken to an ambulance.

"I saw the little baby right here on the floor, and I called 911, and they came here very quick," said Yefry Cipriana.

Two of the bullets struck the glass of a different barber shop on the same block. The other grazed the head of a 20-year-old man, who is expected to be OK.

Silva's family was shaken after the child was caught in the middle of the attack.

"It's just upsetting because we have no park that they could just go and play," said the boy's aunt, Angela Frederico. "If you take them [to the park near the church], they're still going to be shooting over there. They have nowhere to go."

Police are hoping someone turns in the suspect.

"This is an inexcusable act. It should not be tolerated," said Boston Police Superintendent in Chief William Gross. "We don't even want to hear about this culture of no snitching. This is our community. All of us. So folks should step up. This is someone's child. Step up. You owe no allegiance to anyone that would shoot a 7-year-old."

Family members say the child was talking after he was hit, and he's being treated at a hospital, but he should be fine.

Police say the 20-year-old man may have been the target, but police are still investigating.

The suspect, a male believed to be between the ages of 17 and 20, ran off. He was wearing a red hoodie and tan pants at the time of the shooting.
