2 Charged in Burglaries Near MIT, Boston University

Lawrence Elmore and Charles Welsh are charged in 2 burglaries in Boston's Back Bay

Two men have been arrested after a string of recent burglaries in Boston's Back Bay.

At least nine burglaries have targeted MIT fraternity houses on Commonwealth Avenue, Beacon Street and Memorial Drive.

Friday, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office announced that 65-year-old Lawrence Elmore and 63-year-old Charles Welsh had each been charged in two cases.

In an incident at 450 Beacon St., the men are charged with larceny under $1,200, and at 487 Commonwealth Ave., they are charged with larceny over $1,200. In both cases, they are also charged with felony counts of breaking and entering in the day.

In the Phi Kappa Theta frat at 229 Commonwealth Ave., a male student reported waking up in the middle of the night to find the burglar opening his bedroom door, shining a flashlight into his room. The suspect fled the scene.

"Pretty clever, because it's easy to get in the house whenever you want, really. No one is really paying attention. There's always random people coming in and out," said Connor Whittemore who lives in one of the frats.

The burglars got away with items like PlayStations, laptops and wallets.

MIT Police warned students to lock their doors and windows and report any suspicious activity. Boston University Police also warned their students because of the proximity of the burglaries to Kenmore Square.

Bail was set at $500 for each suspect. Elmore and Welsh were ordered to keep away from MIT property and the scenes of the incidents. They were also given a condition of GPS monitoring.

The suspects are due back in court on Aug. 7.
