Melrose Shooting Suspect Arrested After Manhunt Sunday Night

Christopher Corcoran, 44, of Melrose, was arrested Monday afternoon and is facing multiple charges including two counts of armed assault with intent to murder, police said.

Police have located the suspect they spent hours searching for Sunday night in Melrose, Massachusetts, in connection to a double stabbing.

Christopher Corcoran, 44, of Melrose, was arrested Monday and charged with two counts each of armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a firearm. He is also charged with possession of a firearm without a license.

Authorities allege Corcoran stabbed two men around 7:30 p.m. in the area of 44 Waverly Place, off West Wyoming Drive, and then took off.

Responding officers found the two victims suffering from gunshot wounds to their lower bodies. They were taken to local hospitals to be treated for their injuries and have since been released, police said Monday.

Law enforcement searched the immediate area Sunday night looking for the suspect who was believed to be armed but were unable to find anyone. Police told residents to avoid the area of Waverly Place as they searched for several hours.

According to Melrose police, officers responded to the area of 44 Waverly Place, off West Wyoming Drive, around 7:30 p.m. for a reported shooting and found two male victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

State and local police detectives collected evidence from the crime scene Sunday night, including shell casings, and they were able to identify Corcoran as the alleged suspect.

Investigators allege the incident stemmed from a verbal altercation that occurred between Corcoran and the victims shortly before the shooting took place. Melrose police said Sunday they believed the suspect and victims were known to each other and that the stabbing was not a random act.

A woman who lives in the area told NBC10 Boston that she wasn't home when it happened but she was shocked to hear about it and hoped police would find whoever was responsible.

"It's really surprising," Huda Haddadi said. "Nothing ever happens here, never heard gunshots...This is the first time something like that happened."

Corcoran was arrested without incident around 2:20 p.m. Monday in Saugus, police said. He is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Malden District Court. It was not immediately clear if he had obtained an attorney who could speak to the charges.

An investigation is active and ongoing.
