2 Dead After Fire Destroys Cape Cod Home

Authorities told NBC10 Boston earlier on Monday that they believed the house was empty at the time of the blaze; however, the remains of two people were later found that day

Two people were found dead in a Cape Cod house fire hours after fire officials previously said they believed the home was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

Wellfleet fire crews received a call of a possible brush fire in town early Monday, according to Dan Keane, deputy chief of the Eastham Fire Department.

A responding firetruck experienced a mechanical issue and took longer than expected to arrive on scene, Keane said. The delay prompted crews to declare a second alarm.

When firefighters arrived at the Lt. Island residence in South Wellfleet, they saw a two-story home fully engulfed in flames. Water was difficult to access, making the fight against the fire challenging, according to Keane.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the property and refrain the flames from reaching nearby structures. Eastham firefighters assisted in battling the blaze.

The home's chimney was the sole structure left standing, Keane said. Officials are now conducting a salvage operation.

Authorities told NBC10 Boston earlier on Monday that they believed the house was empty at the time of the blaze; however, the remains of two people were later found that day.

The identities of the deceased individuals have not been released.

It is unclear what sparked the inferno. The investigation, which is being led by Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Barnstable district attorney's office and the state fire marshal's office, is ongoing.
