The move-in period has officially started in Boston.
Every year, new and returning students move into dorms or apartments near the city’s universities. This traditional rite of passage reaches its peak between late August and early September, when streets are flooded with furniture and traffic delays are expected.
To help residents plan their movements accordingly, apartment hunting site RentHop has published two heat maps based on the number of issued moving truck permits for dates up to September 16, 2017. By looking at the maps, it is easy to spot which neighborhoods are busier than others, and under which time frame and dates.
The two maps show, respectively, the number of issued permits on a weekly and daily basis.

RentHop focused exclusively on the expiration dates of the moving truck permits (which it says generally coincides with the actual moving dates). Based on the number of permits that will expire, the top five busiest dates for August and September are:
- September 1, 2017 (865 permits due to expire)
- August 31, 2017 (478 permits due to expire)
- August 26, 2017 (194 permits due to expire)
- September 2, 2017 (193 permits are due to expire)
- August 30, 2017 (159 permits due to expire)
