Driver Unscathed After Shots Fired at Vehicle

Police arrested three men after shots were fired, striking a car early Sunday morning in Canton, Massachusetts.

The driver of a BMW with five bullet holes in it did not know the suspects. Neighbors are wondering why such an attack would take place in their town.

Gunshots rang out off of Washington Street early in the morning.

"I just heard in the distance, 'Pow-pow-pow-pow,'" said Canton resident Jeremy Scott. "It sounded like gunshots."

The driver of the vehicle said he was traveling down Route 128 and exited onto Route 138 Around 4:30 a.m. He said another vehicle pulled alongside him and fired the shots.

The bullet holes landed on the driver's side doors - at least two shots entered the vehicle, coming close to hitting the driver.

"They thought that they were throwing rocks or possibly a BB gun," said Canton Police Chief Ken Berkowitz. "They didn't realize that it was actually a pistol until after they passed the car and then they shot back a couple of rounds at them when they continued to follow."

Police say the driver followed the vehicle onto Washington Street. Canton Police alerted neighboring towns, and officers from Mansfield were able to arrest 27-year-old Yancey Williams and 35-year-old Louis Whitehead from Boston, as well as 37-year-old Arthur Williams from Randolph.

All three were inside the vehicle where the shots came from. Even though the victim and suspects don't know each other, officers having a hard time believing the shooting was random.

"There's a level of planning involved in it, and there's direction and thought process behind it that would lead one person to do that," said Mansfield Police Chief Ronald Sellon.

Police have not located the gun, but the suspects will be arraigned Monday at Stoughton District Court.
