Scattered Showers To Continue Afternoon Across Region

The heavy downpours and thunderstorms that started Patriots Day for so many New Englanders, are slowly diminishing for quieter weather, but it's not completely finished.

In fact, breaks of sun will belie an unstable atmosphere, ready to bubble up new clouds as soon as late morning to midday, leading to scattered showers across most of the six-state region.

As colder air streams in aloft, a rumble of thunder is possible in some of the scattered afternoon downpours. Eventually, that colder air leads to some snow showers in the Green Mountains of Vermont before the showers completely diminish Monday night.

On Monday, increasing winds from the west will gust over 50 mph overnight, knocking out power for some and delivering cool and dry air for one and all. Tuesday and Wednesday should be bright and pleasant days. They may very well end up the pick of the week for school vacationers.

Clouds are expected to increase Thursday and the chance of rain showers will rise Friday and Saturday as a large storm system wraps up from the Great Lakes into Eastern Canada.

On the upside, temperatures will rise concurrent with the shower chance as a southerly wind cranks up ahead of the approaching storm center. Both Friday and Saturday will need to be watched for possible thunderstorm development in addition to expected showers.

A wealth of atmospheric energy overhead will probably mean showers pop up again on Sunday, particularly during the afternoon with the most showers in northern and western New England.

Of course, next week school vacation shifts to New Hampshire, and the weather looks seasonable with a chance of lingering pop-up showers early in the week. Yet another energetic disturbance raises the chance of showers late in the week.
