ATV Rider Shot on Interstate 93 Held on Bail

A Massachusetts man is being held on bail following his arraignment for allegedly driving an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) recklessly on Interstate 93 in Boston on Saturday.

Aderito Monteiro, 28, of Randolph, was charged with negligent operation; failure to stop for police; disorderly conduct; marked lanes violation; driving an unregistered ATV; and driving an uninsured ATV.

State police said Monteiro drove his ATV toward a trooper and a Boston police officer on the exit 18 off-ramp to Massachusetts Avenue at about 5 p. Saturday. He suffered a minor foot injury when a trooper discharged his weapon during the incident.

"We're willing to defend this case, and it appears to be a defendable case," said defense attorney Manuel Pires at Monteiro's arraignment Monday in Boston Municipal Court.

Monteiro was taken to Boston Medical Center for treatment a non-life threatening injury and later released. He was then taken to a state police barracks and booked.

"There's clearly and injury to his foot, it's bandaged up and he's having trouble walking," Pires said.

Authorities said Monteiro was one of 25-35 people who had been riding off-road bikes, ATVs, and motorcycles in a reckless manner throughout the city. Police had received several 911 calls about the group.

Police encountered the group on the I-93 southbound ramp where cell phone video from one of the riders showed the vehicles scattered as police tried to get the situation under control. One biker tried to ride on the median to escape. The incident stalled traffic on the highway.

During the incident, police said another rider complained of some kind of pain and was transported to an area hospital for evaluation. He was later arrested.

A trooper was also taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment of a knee injury.

Many riders fled the scene on foot — leaving their vehicles behind. Police later had the vehicles towed from the scene.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh says "there's not a lot" the city can do to stop the dangerous joy-riding.

"We have to get them," he said. "I think the state police arresting seven ... that's one action that can happen. I mean, we try to confiscate these bikes as best we can."

Monteiro has been ordered held on $2,000 bail and is not allowed to drive.

Five other riders were apprehended at the scene. Police later identified them and the other one who had been hospitalized as:

Christopher Cabassa, 31, of Lawrence; William Suliveras, 29, of Methuen; Shane Fein, 21, of North Attleborough; Gustavo Arceno-Rosa, 22, of Saugus; Josue Hidalgo, 23, of Worcester; and Edgar Dossantos Jr., 30, of Quincy.

The men face various charges including failure to stop for police; negligent operation; disorderly conduct; wrong way violation on a state highway; marked lanes violation; unlicensed operation; no inspection sticker; resisting arrest; resisting arrest; and careless operation in a tunnel.

Those men will be arraigned on charges Tuesday in Boston Municipal Court. It's unclear if the men have attorneys.
