A Massachusetts man faced a judge Tuesday morning in connection with the July 4 killing of a man in Dorchester, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.
Michael Carleton, 32, of Mattapan, was arraigned in Roxbury Municipal Court on a charge of murder and was ordered held without bail.
Assistant District Attorney Masai King told the judge Carleton was among a group of people gathered near the intersection of Dacia and Brookford streets shortly before 10 p.m. when the passenger of a vehicle allegedly driven by Carleton opened fire on the group.
Thirty-six-year-old Deondra Lee, of Dorchester, was struck by the gunfire. He was taken to Boston Medical Center where he later died.
The shooting was captured by a public safety camera. In the video, authorities said the vehicle is seen circling the block prior to the shooting and slows as the passenger opens fire.
"Public safety camera footage was absolutely critical in building this case," Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley said. "It helped investigators identify the car and, we allege, the person driving it."
Authorities were able to locate the vehicle abandoned in a Dudley Street parking lot. After investigators matched fingerprints on the driver's side door and gear shift to Carleton, he was taken into custody Tuesday morning.
