A criminal investigation is underway after the body of a woman was found near the entrance to a wastewater treatment plant in Athol, Massachusetts, early Monday morning.
The Northwestern District Attorney's Office said the death is considered criminal in nature.
The identity of the woman has not been released, but authorities said she's in her 20s.
Police on the scene Monday afternoon were focusing their investigation on the driveway leading up to the facility on Jones Street.
A nearby resident told NBC10 Boston she was questioned by police and that officers had been looking closely at a car parked in the area.
Nearby resident Sharon Powell told NBC10 Boston she saw a car parked by the plant Monday morning and thought nothing of it until she spoke with police.
"They were all surrounding the car, so I assume the car was involved," Powell said.

Joe Harris, another resident, said investigators were parked near his home for hours.
"It's a tragedy and hopefully something happens where they figure out what's going on," Harris said. "I know as much about this as you do right now and you know probably more."
Another man who did not want to be identified told NBC10 Boston he knows the woman who died.
"I only met her a couple times. She had been hanging around my girl's son. He had been hanging around his house for two weeks now, I think," the man said.
The cause of the woman's death has not yet been determined.
No further information was immediately available.
