Maine State Police: Body Found in Trunk After Man Kills Himself During Traffic Stop

After a driver with Massachusetts license plates was pulled over following a report of erratic driving, he immediately got out of the car and shot and killed himself

A dead body was found in the trunk of a car after a man committed suicide during a traffic stop, Maine officials said Thursday night.

State police received a call of erratic driving on Interstate 295 before stopping the vehicle a short time later on Timberwood Drive in Gardiner around 4:45 p.m.

The driver, who has not been identified, immediately got out of the car and shot himself.

As police were investigating, they discovered a body in the trunk of the car.

The cause of the death for the person in the trunk is not known at this time.

Both the man and the body found in the trunk will undergo autopsies and examinations at the State Medical Examiner's Officer in Augusta.

The car had Massachusetts license plates, according to WCSH.

Police say there is no ongoing threat to the public.

A team of state police detectives is investigating.
