Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy will be out for at least four weeks due to an injury he suffered over the weekend, the team announced.

McAvoy sustained a sprain of his left MCL in the first period of Saturday's game against Montreal, General Manager Don Sweeney said in a statement Tuesday.

Following the injury, the team quickly announced he was "not likely" to return and gave no further information.

"All I did, was see it real quick on the bench," Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said Saturday. "Did he get his foot caught up with the other guy? Or is that something before that? I don't have a good answer for that to be honest. ... Hopefully it's not serious. It didn't look serious at the time."
