Members of the Boston Police Department are heading to New York Friday morning to pay their respects to an officer killed in the line of duty.

Dozens of officers left their union headquarters in Roxbury Friday morning to head to Long Island for the funeral of Officer Brian Moore.

Moore died Monday after being shot in the head while on duty Saturday in Queens Village. He and his partner were opened fire on while attempting to stop a man suspected of carrying a handgun.

Patrick Rose, president of the Boston Police Patrol Association, said, “Boston and New York have had a very special relationship for many years. Back on 9/11, we went down and assisted them. After the marathon they came up and assisted us. We’ve had a very close relationship over the years.”

Rose said the job has become more dangerous lately.

Just this March, Boston Police Officer John Moynihan was shot in the face during a traffic stop in Roxbury. Thankfully he is now home recovering.

Rose said, “John Moynihan, by the grace of God survived. Sadly we couldn’t say the same about New York. It’s just the way it is today.”

Boston officers will also be working to cook breakfast and lunch for those attending the funeral.
