A man ripped a gas line from a wall Friday in Boston's Charlestown neighborhood and threatened to set it ablaze, according to police.
Officers responded shortly after noon to an apartment building on Walford Way. They received a call about an emotionally disturbed person. A 57-year-old man was barricaded in a unit, and officers say they saw him trying to use a lighter in the room where he had created the gas leak.
Police say they used a "less-lethal, Super Sock round shotgun" to disarm him and put him in custody.
The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
"This was obviously an extremely dangerous incident, both for the residents of the building and for my officers," Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said in a statement. "The officers knew they needed to act quickly, and I applaud their restraint in a volatile and unstable situation."
Police say they will seek complaints against the man for attempted arson, assault with a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct.
