Boston to Honor Martin Luther King Jr. With Memorial

The words and the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be remembered with a memorial in Boston.

Nothing is set in stone at this time. It could be an abstract expression like the one at Boston University, similar to his likeness like the statue in Washington D.C., or even something like the Garden of Peace downtown.

Organizers say they are open to ideas, but his speeches, his marches and his movement will never be forgotten.

"We're making sure Dr. King’s words continue to be a part of our conversation."

"I’m so proud Boston will have a major public memorial to Dr. King and Coretta Scott King."

The city and non-profit MLK Boston are asking artists to submit their ideas, suggestions and inspiration.

So far, no decision has been made on location or what the memorial should look like.

"Something that encourages people to reflect would be a good thing."

Where the memorial should go is a more controversial question.

"I think it should be in Roxbury, Dorchester or Mattapan."

Some say an ideal place would be the 12th Baptist Church where King preached.

Others say a central location like the Boston Common.

"The Common would be good because it’s an iconic part of the city where people come from all over the world."

"It’ll be a good show of the progress we made and the progress that’s still to be made."

Artists have until February 28 to submit their ideas.

A decision on design is expected by November 2018.
