    What to Know

    • A 2-year-old girl was injured Tuesday on a slide at Buzzards Bay Park in Bourne, Massachusetts.

    • The toddler was taken to a hospital in Rhode Island, where her toe had to be removed.

    • Witnesses say the slide had been taped off since at least last week, suggesting park officials knew of the issue before the accident.

Town officials in Bourne, Massachusetts, are looking into how a 2-year-old injured her toe so badly going down a slide it needed to be removed after she was rushed to a Rhode Island hospital.

The accident took place Tuesday at Buzzards Bay Park, but parents say the slide had tape around it as early as last week.

"We came by last week and I saw security tape, the yellow tape around that," said one Bourne grandparent, who did not want to be identified. "I walked over and I did see the crack. It's on the curve of the slide."

Parents in town that spoke with NBC10 Boston, confused as to why the town would only put up tape to prevent kids from getting on if they knew it was broken.

"Maybe they need to take the slide out right now until it's fixed right," said Tori Nelson.

"We are assessing the reasons that may have contributed to the accident," Bourne Town Administrator Thomas Guerino said in a statement. "The park will remain closed until a park safety specialist inspection and recommends that it be reopened."
