Chilly Air Moves into Region Tonight

Cold will stall over area into Friday

What to Know

  • Cold temperatures move into the region overnight and will stall here for the next couple of days.
  • Somewhat milder temps return Friday.

The area of low pressure that brought heavy rain and snow to the region on the last day of 2018, has moved out and behind it, left snow totals in the state of Maine of up to 7 inches.

On this first day of 2019, mild air took center stage with highs that soared into the mid and upper 50s this morning across Southern New England due to a strong south-westerly flow. Wind gusts of up to 55 mph are still possible early this afternoon, which could cause isolated power outages, the wind will subside late this afternoon into the evening hours setting us up for a chilly night under breezy conditions with lows in the 20s, south while teens and single digits to the north.

High pressure will move in Wednesday, allowing for the sun to shine but it stays cold with highs in the 30s near the South Coast, while the North Country will remain in the 20s.

Thursday morning, there’s a disturbance that will move through the region bringing a slight chance for light snow showers all the way into Boston with accumulations of less than an inch on grassy surfaces. Friday looks dry and mild but just in time for the weekend, another storm will move in from the southwest with a chance for rain in Southern New England and snow towards the mountains.

The best day of the weekend is shaping up to be Sunday, with a mostly sunny sky and highs in the 40s. Our exclusive 10-day forecast indicates the return of colder air and possible snow showers for the second week of the New Year.
