MassDOT: Comm. Ave. Bridge Project Will Impact Traffic, Last Through Mid-August

Construction for the Comm. Ave Bridge project will begin July 23 and is expected to end Aug. 11

What to Know

  • Construction on the west side of the Comm. Ave. Bridge will impact traffic.
  • Crews will be working on the bridge from July 26 through Aug. 11.
  • Public transportation in the surrounding area will be impacted as well.

Construction on the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge is expected to greatly impact traffic for 15 days, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

Beginning Thursday, MassDOT will replace the westbound side of the bridge through Aug. 11. The construction will also affect travel on Interstate 90, Commonwealth Avenue and the Boston University Bridge.

"Do anything you can to avoid coming into the area," MassDOT Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver said. "Make sure you fully understand what you're in for before you take your commute."

Officials expect the MBTA Green Line B Branch and nearby bus service to be impacted. The MBTA Commuter Rail Worcester/Framingham line and Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited will also be affected for the weekends of July 27 and Aug. 3. Businesses in the area are concerned. They dealt with constructiion last year, too.

"It hurt us. It took about 30 percent of our business out of here," said Louis Fenerlis, owner of Louie's Haircuts. "The people that travel in from outside of this area, those are the ones we worry about the most, because they're our bread and butter."
