Car crashes and massive pile ups around Massachusetts due to black ice kept insurance agents busy on Wednesday.
Many of the drivers involved in the vehicle pile up on Interstate 95 in Wakefield said they were not sure about liability and their insurance claims.
“I don’t know whose at fault because I don’t know who hit my car,” said Wisner Paul.
There are some things you need to do immediately to make sure you have everything you need when filing an insurance claim.
Frank Doyle with AAA said Massachusetts law is very specific if you have been hit from behind. He said it's incredibly rare that you are at fault, however, if you are the last person in, and the chances of you being liable for a fair amount of damage is pretty clear.
Doyle also said most involved in Wednesday’s pileups won’t have to pay for damage.
If you are involved in a weather related crash you should do the following:
- File a police report
- Take pictures of the damage
- Report the incident to your insurance company promptly
Doyle also stressed the importance of taking pictures.

“It’s great if you’re able to for example take photos of the license plate of the car, the damage and the person’s driver’s license so you can provide that to your insurance company,” he said.
It’s also a good idea to print out the news of the day and traffic reports about the black ice and vehicle pile ups. All that information will come in handy if your insurance company finds you at fault and you want to appeal to avoid surcharges on your insurance.
