Convention Center Head Rooney Picked to Lead Chamber

James Rooney has been named president and chief executive of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce

One of the region's most influential business groups has a new leader.

James Rooney has been named president and chief executive of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. He succeeds Paul Guzzi, who will retire on July 1 after nearly two decades at the helm.

Rooney is currently the executive director of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority, a position he has held since 2003. He served prior to that as chief of staff to the late Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.

The chairman of the 1,500-member chamber's board of directors, John Fish, has also announced plans to step down and focus on his role as chairman of the organizing group for Boston's 2024 Olympic bid. He'll be replaced by Dr. Navjot Singh, managing partner of Mckinsey & Co.
