Court Officer Indicted on Rape, Assault Charges

A Lawrence District Court officer is accused of raping a prisoner.

A Lawrence, Massachusetts, court officer is accused of sexually assaulting a female prisoner, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office confirms.

Jose Martinez, a 46-year-old man from Lawrence, has been indicted on four counts of rape, six counts of indecent assault and battery, and single counts of assault with intent to rape and misleading investigators.

Prosecutors say Martinez indecently assaulted the victim in a holding cell, a prisoner elevator, and in a courthouse stairwell on three separate dates in 2009 and 2014. The victim disclosed the 2014 assaults to staff at a jail where she was later held, promoting an investigation by Massachusetts State Police.

Previously, Martinez was arrested on a sexual assault charge on March 4 and placed on leave from Lawrence District Court. He was arrested again one week later after he allegedly attempted to mislead State Police during their investigation, and his bail was revoked.

Martinez was employed with Lawrence District Court for 15 years. He will appear in Lynn District Court on Wednesday.
