3-Alarm Roof Fire Knocked Down in Boston

Crews knocked down a 3-alarm fire in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood Saturday afternoon.

No injuries were reported after the fire broke out at 23 Fort Ave. Crews responded just after 4 p.m.

Jordan Sarbaugh was out walking her two dogs when she looked up and saw smoke coming from the roof of the brownstone where she lives.

"As soon as you got closer, and started to see the flames on the patio, you'd definitely know it was our building," she said.

She ran inside to tell her fiance. They live in the bottom unit.

"I was just sitting on the couch, finishing up lunch," said Morgan Hill. "I heard Jordan come running in, saying the building was on fire."

Officials say the fire started when a power strip short-circuited on the top floor. It extended through the window and walls, up to the roof deck of the 2-family home.

"Most of the fire damage was on the roof and the roof deck," said Boston Fire Deputy Chief Michael Doherty. "There was a lot of water damage to all the building, as well."

The fire displaced four adults and two dogs, all of whom will be staying with friends and relatives.

It is estimated that the fire caused about $750,000 damage.

Fire officials received the call just minutes before another fire in neighboring Jamaica Plain was reported. Seven people were displaced in that blaze.
