Crews Battle Strip Mall Fire in Seekonk, Masachusetts

None of the stores in the plaza were open when the fire started

Firefighters in Seekonk, Massachusetts, battled a 3-alarm blaze at a strip mall on Route 6 on Sunday.

The blaze broke out on Fall River Avenue around 6:30 p.m. in a plaza that houses several small businesses. An off-duty police officer phoned in the fire after he saw smoke billowing from one of the establishments, fire officials say.

Responding firefighters had trouble finding hydrants because they were buried in snow. Part of the roof collapsed due to the flames and heat.

None of the stores in the plaza were open when the fire started. It appears that at least six businesses were destroyed. No one was injured.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
