Fire officials said the water was shut off, but that it left roads with major damage.

Six buildings in the area were evacuated because of water in their basements, according to the Boston Fire Department.

Boston Water and Sewer said residents would receive temporary shelter. The city's Office of Neighborhood Services was on scene to help the people displaced, fire officials said.

Multiple streets in the vicinity of the break were shut down to traffic. Police asked drivers to seek alternate routes.
