DA: Man Killed When Retaining Wall Tumbles On Top of Him in Peabody

A man was killed Monday afternoon in an apparent accident outside of a home in Peabody, Massachusetts.

According to the Essex County District Attorney's Office, the 76-year-old man had been working on a retaining wall near a creek by his home on Lowell Street, when the wall gave way and rocks tumbled on top of him.

Area resident Mitchell Rosenwald said he was sad to hear what happened.

"Not sure what he was doing down there. The home that was by the brook there was sold recently so I don't know if he lived there or was a worker, but it just sounds like a really unfortunate accident which is a bummer," Rosenwald said.

Authorities said the victim, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead.

First responders had to use special equipment to remove the rocks in order to free the victim's body from the rubble.

Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Essex County District Attorney's Office are investigating.
