East Bridgewater Officer Assaulted, Suspect Arrested

A 23-year-old East Bridgewater man will be charged with assault and battery on a police officer

A Massachusetts police officer was assaulted Sunday while responding to a call for a medical emergency.

The officer who was struck suffered a minor injury and was evaluated at South Shore Hospital as a precaution.

A 23-year-old East Bridgewater man, whose name has not been provided by officials, was arrested and he will be charged with assault and battery on a police officer after the incident Sunday afternoon.

East Bridgewater police responded around 3:38 p.m. to a home on Spring Street for a medical emergency.

Responding officers were speaking to the man when he allegedly attacked, striking one of the officers above his eye.

The man then fled into the woods near his home, prompting a police search for him.

The Bridgewater and West Bridgewater police departments responded to the scene to assist in the search.

The suspect was located approximately 30 minutes later in the area of Spring and Cook streets where he was placed under arrest without further incident. He was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

Police say he will be booked following his release and arraigned at a later date.

No other information was immediately available.
