Elderly Veteran Pickpocketed While Loading Groceries at NH Market Basket

Matthew Siwik, 37, of Goffstown, turned himself in to police after his picture was posted by various news outlets

A New Hampshire man grabbed an elderly man's wallet while the senior was loading groceries into his truck outside a Market Basket in Manchester earlier this week, police said.

The 85-year-old veteran told police he went to his truck after shopping about 2 p.m. Monday outside the Elm Street store when he saw a silver Volkswagen driving slowly between a row of cars.

When the man turned his back to put his groceries inside his truck, he said, a man jumped out of the Volkswagen, grabbed his wallet and took off in the car.

Inside the wallet was a bank card that police say the thief later tried to use at two 7-Elevens. The card was located in a trash barrel outside one of the stores.

After reviewing surveillance video taken at the stores, police posted a picture of 37-year-old Matthew Siwik, of Goffstown, in hopes of making an arrest.

Siwik turned himself in to police on Wednesday. He is being charged with theft and unauthorized taking.

Siwik is scheduled to appear in Hillsborough Superior Court – North on Sept. 26. It's unclear if he has an attorney.
