Emergency crews are dealing with a hazmat scene in Chelsea, Massachusetts after an apparent opioid overdose death on Thursday afternoon.
Police Chief Brian Kyes said police, fire and emergency medical services responded to an apparent overdose of an unconscious man in Cary Square. The call came in around 1:30 p.m.
Narcan was used and the man was transported to Whidden Hospital in Everett, where he was pronounced dead.
Kyes said a white powder was observed in the vehicle where the man had apparently overdosed. Police and fire officials say the substance is believed to be fentanyl.
As a precautionary measure, the chief said the scene is being handled as a hazardous materials situation. A Massachusetts State Police hazmat team is on scene to determine what the substance is.
